Switzerland's Shocking Gender Vote: Will Women Be Drafted?!
Current Affairs 30 November 2025

Switzerland is never short on interesting referendums, and this weekend is no exception. Voters are heading to the polls to decide on a rather significant question: Should national service, currently mandatory for men, also be mandatory for women? It's a debate that touches on everything from gender equality and national security to economic impact and social cohesion.

Switzerland's Shocking Gender Vote: Will Women Be ...

The initiative, cleverly titled the "citizen service initiative," aims to create a broader sense of responsibility and shared experience across Swiss society. Proponents argue that by requiring all citizens – regardless of gender – to contribute to the nation, whether through military service, civil protection, or other community-focused roles, Switzerland would be better equipped to face future crises. They envision a system that creates valuable jobs in areas like environmental protection, food security, and elder care – all crucial in today's uncertain world.

But, as is often the case with these things, the devil is in the details. The Swiss Parliament is staunchly opposed, and for good reason, I think. Their primary concern? The cost. Implementing such a program would be expensive. Beyond that, taking a large chunk of young people, particularly women, out of the workforce could have significant economic consequences. It's a fair point. You can't just pull tens of thousands of individuals from their jobs and studies without expecting some disruption.

Initial polls suggested a tight race, a real nail-biter. However, more recent surveys paint a different picture, indicating the initiative is likely to fail. This doesn’t entirely surprise me. The Swiss are generally pragmatic, and the potential economic downsides might be outweighing the perceived benefits of greater social cohesion in voters’ minds. Still, the fact that it even got this far speaks volumes about the ongoing conversations surrounding national security in Europe, especially in light of the war in Ukraine.

The government's stance is also nuanced. While acknowledging the potential for mandatory service to be seen as a step toward gender equality, they also highlight the burden it could place on women who already shoulder a disproportionate share of unpaid childcare and household responsibilities. It's a valid consideration. Are we truly promoting equality if we're simply adding another layer of obligation onto women without addressing existing imbalances?

Currently, only men are required to serve in the military or civil protection, with alternatives available for conscientious objectors. This initiative would flip the script, mandating service for all citizens and expanding the definition of national security beyond just military matters. Interesting, too, is the provision that would allow parliament to require public service from foreign residents. It’s a big swing, no doubt about it. Ultimately, the Swiss voters will decide whether this is the right path forward for their nation.
