The gaming world recently bid farewell to Tomonobu Itagaki, the creative force behind iconic franchises like Dead or Alive and the modern Ninja Gaiden series. A memorial service held in his honor drew industry heavyweights, a testament to the impact he had on the landscape of 3D action games. Itagaki passed away last month at the age of 58, leaving behind a legacy of fast-paced combat and, shall we say, distinctive character designs.

Among those paying their respects was Yosuke Hayashi, Executive Vice President at Koei Tecmo. This is particularly noteworthy considering Itagaki's somewhat turbulent departure from the company years ago. It speaks volumes about the respect and affection that remained, even amidst past disagreements. Hayashi's eulogy, in particular, offered a poignant glimpse into Itagaki's character.

Hayashi recalled his time working under Itagaki, describing those six months as a "treasured part" of his game development career. It wasn't just the games they worked on, it seems, but the man himself. He recounted a reunion with Itagaki shortly before his passing, a meeting apparently characterized by a comfortable silence and understanding. "No other unnecessary words were exchanged," Hayashi said, adding simply, "You were so pure and cool." That brevity, that feeling of unspoken understanding, feels incredibly powerful.

Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada was also present, further highlighting the reach of Itagaki's influence. While I wasn't personally there, I can imagine the atmosphere in the room; a mixture of sadness, respect, and perhaps even a touch of awe for a man who, for better or worse, always did things his way. Itagaki's games were never shy about pushing boundaries, and that same fearless attitude seemed to define his approach to life.

It's easy to focus on the more sensational aspects of Itagaki's career – the controversy, the bold statements – but Hayashi's words paint a different picture, one of a man of principle, perhaps even a man of few words when it mattered most. "Pure and cool" might not be the first phrases that come to mind when thinking of Dead or Alive's… unique design choices, but maybe that's the point. Maybe Itagaki was more than just the sum of his games. He was a visionary who left an undeniable mark on the industry, and he will be missed. The outpouring of respect at his memorial certainly suggests that.
