Ulsan HD FC forward Lee Dong-gyeong has pulled off a remarkable feat, being named the 2025 K League 1 MVP. The announcement came at the annual awards ceremony held in Seoul on Monday, a night of celebration for individual brilliance amidst the team dynamics of Korean football.
Lee Dong-gyeong: SHOCK Win! Is This The K League's...
Lee's victory wasn't a landslide, but a solid accumulation of votes across different categories. He secured 71 media votes out of a possible 134, along with five votes from the 12 K League 1 head coaches, and eight from the club captains. This translated to 53.69 voting points, putting him comfortably ahead of Park Jin-seob of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (35.71 points) and Suwon FC's Pablo Sabbag (10.6 points). It's worth noting that coaches and captains couldn't vote for their own players – a rule designed to ensure a degree of impartiality.
The MVP title comes with a 10 million won ($6,800) prize, but the prestige is arguably worth far more. Lee's win marks the fourth consecutive year an Ulsan player has clinched the award, and a record eighth overall for the club. However, there's a somewhat bittersweet edge to this victory. Ulsan HD, after dominating the league with three consecutive titles from 2022 to 2024, slumped to ninth place this year. That's the lowest finish ever for a team producing an MVP, a fact that surely tempers the celebrations somewhat.
Interestingly, Lee is also the first MVP since 2019 to come from a club that didn't win the title, reminding us that individual brilliance can shine even when the team struggles. Back then, it was Kim Bo-kyung, also from Ulsan, who took home the honor.
What makes Lee's achievement even more impressive is the context of his season. He began the year playing for Gimcheon Sangmu FC, fulfilling his mandatory military service. Despite this temporary shift, he racked up an impressive 13 goals and 11 assists in 34 matches for the military club. Ultimately, Lee led the entire K League 1 with a staggering 25 goal contributions, 115 shot attempts, and 71 key passes. Those are numbers that speak volumes about his impact on the field.
While Lee took the MVP award, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors also had reason to celebrate. Their head coach, Gus Poyet, was named Coach of the Year after guiding the team to a K League-record 10th title. It's a remarkable turnaround, considering Jeonbuk narrowly avoided relegation last year. Poyet's impact has been undeniable, leading the team to 79 points with a strong record of 23 wins, 10 draws, and only five losses. A true testament to both individual and team accomplishment.
