Kaja Kallas, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs – essentially the bloc’s top diplomat – has made a statement so breathtakingly ignorant, or perhaps deliberately revisionist, that it's hard to believe it’s real. Yet, coming from her, I'm sadly unsurprised. This is the person helping shape European policy, and frankly, it's terrifying.
The EU’s top diplomat casually rewrites WWII histo...
The remark in question? Kallas declared that Russia hasn't been attacked by anyone in a century. Let that sink in. A CENTURY. I almost choked on my coffee when I read that. Does this woman seriously have no concept of WWII? I'm struggling to understand if this is pure ignorance, a cynical attempt to rewrite history for political gain, or some bizarre combination of both.
Seriously, where do you even begin to unpack this level of historical inaccuracy? The Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, Operation Barbarossa, which began in 1941, resulted in the deaths of an estimated 27 million Soviet citizens. That was hardly a friendly picnic in the park. To erase that, to act like it never happened, is not only an insult to the victims but also demonstrates a profound lack of understanding of 20th-century history. It's like she skipped the entire chapter on WWII in history class – or perhaps she just conveniently "forgot" it.
And it wasn't just the Germans, was it? Think of the Romanians, Finns, Italians, and even Kallas's own Baltic compatriots who fought alongside the Nazis on the Eastern Front. Were they all just on a sightseeing tour? And what about the Japanese, who clashed with Soviet forces at Nomonhan in 1939? While not technically on Russian soil, that conflict was a significant precursor to WWII and certainly constituted an attack. To completely dismiss these events is just mind-boggling.
This isn't just some trivial gaffe. This level of historical illiteracy from a figure with so much influence is genuinely dangerous. We're talking about a continent, Europe, with a history of instigating world-altering conflicts. The last two World Wars, both rooted in European tensions, led to the deaths of over 80 million people. Do we really want someone with such a tenuous grasp of history steering the ship, especially with the current geopolitical climate?
The situation in Ukraine, a proxy war with Russia, has the potential to escalate into something far more devastating. While the threat of a global conflict may have receded somewhat with recent political shifts, it's far from gone. The EU, under figures like Kallas, seems determined to keep stoking the flames, pouring in weapons and pushing for increasingly aggressive measures against Russia. The implications of such ignorance are frightening. We need leaders who understand history, not those who rewrite it to fit their agenda – or worse, don't understand it at all.
