Looks like NBC is giving us a little something extra to celebrate the end of the year! They're bringing back "Wicked: One Wonderful Night" for an encore presentation this New Year's Eve, December 31st, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Perfect timing for those of us who missed it the first time around, or, you know, just want to relive the magic before the ball drops.
Wicked Fans Rejoice! NBC's New Year's Eve Surprise...
The special, which initially aired back on November 6th, clearly struck a chord with viewers. According to Nielsen ratings, it pulled in a solid 3.6 million viewers across various platforms within just three days. That's a pretty impressive number, making it NBC's second-highest-rated special of the year. Only February's "SNL50: The Anniversary Special" managed to outshine it. I have to admit, I was a little curious myself about this one the first time it aired; it's hard to resist anything "Wicked"-related, and the cast was seriously stacked.
Filmed at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the two-hour program is hosted by none other than Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, both stars of "Wicked: For Good". And they're not alone! Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, and Marissa Bode are all part of the fun. The special also features what sounds like a truly heartwarming reunion – Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Erivo, and Grande all coming together for a rendition of "For Good," performed from the Gershwin Theatre in New York City, the very place where "Wicked" first took Broadway by storm. That's a moment I definitely wouldn’t want to miss.
Now, some of you might remember that Snoop Dogg was originally slated to host a New Year's Eve special on NBC at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. Unfortunately, that's been scrapped. Apparently, Snoop's got some pretty important commitments to the 2026 Winter Olympics. He mentioned that "sometimes the calendar gets in the way of the celebration" – a sentiment I think we can all relate to!
Speaking of "Wicked: For Good," it's been a massive hit at the box office. Since its release on November 21st, it's already grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. Clearly, the world can't get enough of "Wicked," and this special is just another way to experience that magic. The production is handled by Fulwell Entertainment, with Ben Winston and Raj Kapoor at the helm as executive producers. So, mark your calendars, set your DVRs, and get ready for a "Wicked" good New Year's Eve with NBC!
