Hollywood is at it again, folks! Desperate to snag the next big thing, they've got their sights firmly set on video games. And while the history of video game movie adaptations is... well, let's just say it's been a mixed bag, recent successes like the *Super Mario Bros. Movie*, *Uncharted*, and even the surprisingly fun *Sonic the Hedgehog* films have given studios a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, they've finally cracked the code.
51 Video Game Movies In The Works: How Many Of The...
The result? A staggering number of video game movies are currently in development. I'm talking a *lot*. Fifty-one, according to some counts! Now, anyone who's followed Hollywood for more than five minutes knows that "in development" can mean anything from "fully funded and ready to roll" to "some executive had a cool idea after too much coffee." So, let's temper our excitement a bit.
Here's a peek at some of the projects that are actually showing signs of life. Keep in mind, though: no release date, no guarantee it will actually happen. First up, we have *Elden Ring*. That's right, the famously difficult RPG is getting the big-screen treatment, courtesy of A24. And get this: Alex Garland (*Ex Machina*, *Annihilation*) is writing and directing, with none other than George R.R. Martin on board as a producer. That's a serious pedigree, folks.
Then there's *Helldivers*, a Sony/Columbia Pictures project that's being described as a spiritual successor to *Starship Troopers*. Think over-the-top action and dark humor. Justin Lin, of *Fast and Furious* fame, is directing. On the indie horror front, *The Mortuary Assistant* has already started production, with Willa Holland starring and Jeremiah Kipp directing. Kipp aims to expand on the game's existing lore, which sounds promising.
After what feels like a decade in development purgatory, *Watch Dogs* finally started filming in July. Principal photography wrapped in September, so hopefully, we'll see this Ubisoft adaptation sometime soon. Of course, we can't forget the sequels! *Sonic the Hedgehog 4* is slated for March 19, 2027, and *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie* (a sequel to the *Super Mario Bros. Movie*) is targeting an April 2026 release. I have to admit, seeing Mario in space sounds pretty darn cool.
Finally, and perhaps most intriguingly, we have *Death Stranding*. Hideo Kojima's bizarre, post-apocalyptic delivery simulator is getting not one, but *two* adaptations! A24 is partnering with Kojima Productions for a live-action film, and there's also an "adult-targeted" animated movie in the works. It sounds like Kojima is aiming for a *Death Stranding* cinematic universe. Whether or not these projects actually materialize, and whether they'll be any good, remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure: Hollywood's love affair with video games is far from over.
