Alright, buckle up, Helldivers, because this is a wild one. Sony and PlayStation Productions just announced that Justin Lin, the guy who practically *is* the "Fast & Furious" franchise, is going to direct the "Helldivers" movie. Yes, *that* Justin Lin, the one who brought us Tokyo drifting and enough NOS to blow up a small planet. It's certainly... unexpected.
Helldivers Movie Director NOT a Gamer?! Fast & Fur...
Lin, of course, directed a whole string of "Fast & Furious" films – from "Tokyo Drift" all the way up to "F9." He's clearly got a knack for big, bombastic action and over-the-top spectacle. He'll also be producing the film through his own Perfect Storm Entertainment, alongside the usual suspects from PlayStation Productions: Hutch Parker, Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan. All the big names are on board, it seems.
Now, here's the thing. I haven't seen any indication that Lin is a *gamer*, per se. His filmography mostly revolves around cars and family (and cars *as* family, let's be honest). But, sources say he's interested in digging into the human side of the characters and building out the world and mythology of "Helldivers." That's promising. "Helldivers" does have a darkly satirical streak and a surprising amount of lore tucked away beneath all the bug-squashing, so hopefully, he taps into that.
Adding to the interesting mix is Gary Dauberman, who's writing the script. He's known for his horror work, like "It" and "Annabelle." So, we've got the action director, the horror writer, and a video game property known for its cooperative gameplay and sci-fi action. It's a cocktail of genres that could either be amazing or… well, a spectacular train wreck. Only time will tell. But that's what makes it exciting, right?
This movie was announced alongside a "Horizon Zero Dawn" adaptation back in January. Johan Pilestedt from Arrowhead, the game's developer, has already said they'll have limited involvement. Which, frankly, is a little concerning. You'd hope the creators would have more input. But hey, maybe they're just letting the filmmakers do their thing. I'm hoping for the best. At least there's a fan film already out there for us to watch while we wait. Plot Coalition on YouTube put together a pretty impressive one, clocking in at almost an hour. So, if you need a "Helldivers" fix, that's where to go in the meantime. We'll be keeping an eye on this one, folks. For Super Earth!
