Well folks, it's happened. Rockstar Games finally unleashed its remastered version of Red Dead Redemption onto the world today, December 2nd. Hype has been building for this one, and understandably so. But, as is often the case with these big launches, it hasn't been entirely smooth sailing. Specifically, Xbox users are running into a frustrating snag.
Red Dead Redemption Launch DISASTER?! Xbox Players...
The big selling point for many Xbox owners was the promise of a free, seamless upgrade. If you already owned the digital Xbox 360 version of the game, you were supposed to automatically get the shiny new Xbox Series X|S edition. Instead, reports are flooding in that the upgrade simply isn't appearing. No free download. No celebratory fanfare. Just… the same old Xbox 360 version staring back at them from their digital libraries. Ouch.
Now, Rockstar is aware of the problem. They've issued a statement acknowledging the issue and are apparently working hand-in-hand with Microsoft to get things sorted out. "Thank you for your patience," they said. Which, while appreciated, probably doesn't do much to soothe the sting of a long-awaited release getting off to a rocky start. I can only imagine the frustration; I'd be fuming if my own download was AWOL.
For those who *are* able to play, the updated Red Dead Redemption does boast some pretty impressive upgrades. As GameSpot reported, we're talking higher frame rates, HDR support, and glorious 4K resolutions on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo Switch 2 is going to get some love too, with DLSS, HDR, and even mouse controls! Sounds like a pretty comprehensive overhaul, when it actually *works*.
Beyond this re-release, the rumour mill is churning with whispers of enhanced versions of Red Dead Redemption 2 also being in the works for current-gen consoles. While nothing's confirmed, it certainly adds fuel to the fire for fans hoping to see the entire Red Dead saga get a modern makeover. Let's just hope if that happens, the launch goes a bit smoother than this one. Fingers crossed, Xbox players will be riding into the sunset on their upgraded Red Dead Redemption soon enough.
