Well folks, the political mudslinging continues, and this time it involves accusations of… sleepiness. California Governor Gavin Newsom has thrown a bit of shade at former (and potentially future) President Donald Trump, sharing a video that purports to show the 79-year-old taking a little nap during a recent cabinet meeting. You know, the kind of thing that happens to all of us eventually, but is definitely not ideal when you're supposed to be running the free world.
Trump Caught Napping?! Newsom's Shocking Video Stu...
The video, shared widely across social media (naturally), seems to show Trump with his eyes either narrowed or completely shut as various officials briefed him. Newsom's caption, as you might expect, was less than complimentary. The meeting in question took place on December 2nd, and apparently covered some pretty weighty topics, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The clip itself focuses on moments where Trump appears to be… well, less than fully engaged while Secretary of State discusses his (Trump's) unique ability to resolve the war.
Now, *People* magazine also chimed in, reporting that the former president appeared to close his eyes for extended periods, including during Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's remarks. We all know those cabinet meetings can drag on, but the optics aren't great, especially considering the timing. Which brings us to…
...Trump's late-night (and early-morning) Truth Social activity. Apparently, the former president was firing off posts on his platform well into the night before this meeting, and then was back at it again bright and early. Over 160 posts between 7 p.m. and midnight? That's... a lot. Add that to past observations about a lighter public schedule and reports from outlets like the *New York Times* noting moments where Trump's "battery shows signs of wear," and you can see why this video is generating so much buzz. It's fodder for the age-old question of a candidate's stamina and fitness for office.
Of course, the White House is pushing back hard. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed the "sleepy" claims, telling *People* that President Trump was "listening attentively and running the entire three-hour marathon cabinet meeting." She even pivoted to a completely unrelated talking point about Somali immigrants in Minnesota, which, frankly, just adds a layer of weirdness to the whole situation. It's the kind of deflection we've come to expect, but it hardly addresses the visual evidence that's now out there. Was he tired? Perhaps. Was he actively disengaged? The video certainly suggests it. But ultimately, voters will have to decide what to make of it all.
