Okay, folks, it looks like the hunt is seriously on for the stars of "Saturday Night Live UK." Sky's unscripted boss, Phil Edgar-Jones, spilled the beans (a little, at least) at Content London, confirming that casting is, and I quote, "well underway." He also mentioned they're knee-deep in sifting through applications from writers, and judging by his comments, the comedy community is pretty darn excited about this opportunity.
SNL UK: The Cast Is Taking Shape, But Who Made the...
Remember that initial buzz about the creative team that Deadline reported last month? Well, things are definitely moving forward. It sounds like Sky is really putting potential writers through their paces, asking them to come up with sketch ideas that could feature big-name guest hosts – classic "SNL" style, then. What's interesting is that those selected will need to be locked in from mid-January through early April next year. That suggests a pretty intense production schedule leading up to the show's debut.
Naturally, Edgar-Jones wasn't about to give away any more secrets – he even joked about it, saying his nickname at Sky is "leaky Phil." But honestly, can you blame him? The anticipation is part of the fun. What we *do* know is that Daran Jonno Johnson, the guy behind Disney+'s "Wedding Season," is heading up the writing team, which is a pretty solid choice, in my opinion. Liz Clare, a veteran director of live TV events like the BAFTA Film Awards, will be directing the series. And let's not forget James Longman, the executive producer of "The Late Late Show with James Corden," is also on board. This team is clearly serious about bringing some serious laughs.
Beyond the "SNL UK" buzz, Edgar-Jones also chimed in on the current TV landscape, specifically the popularity of those guessing game shows like "The Traitors." While he acknowledged their appeal, he wisely cautioned against the industry simply churning out copycats. Originality, he stressed, is key. It's a valid point. How many more secret identity shows can we possibly handle? I, for one, am ready for something fresh.
On a slightly different note, Meghan Lyvers, Sky's executive director of scripted programming, revealed that they're actively looking for drama series with a "more soap or fun" element. So, less bleak Scandi-noir, more… well, more fun! It's great to see Sky taking some risks and trying to inject some levity into the drama landscape. All in all, it sounds like Sky has some exciting things in the pipeline, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what they come up with – especially "Saturday Night Live UK." Fingers crossed they find the right cast to make it a smash!
