Águilas, Spain is getting ready to deck the halls, or should I say, set up the mangers! The charming coastal town in Murcia has just announced its 7th annual Christmas Nativity Scene Route, and trust me, it's something you don't want to miss if you're anywhere nearby this festive season. As someone who's spent a fair few Christmases in Spain, I can tell you these "belenes," as the nativity scenes are called, are a serious business – a beautiful, deeply ingrained tradition that truly captures the spirit of the season.
Águilas Christmas Nativity Route REVEALED! See the...
This year's route boasts sixteen intricately crafted nativity displays, scattered throughout the town. You'll find them nestled in churches, cultural centers, adorning public squares, and even in some private venues. What’s particularly special is that these aren't mass-produced, cookie-cutter displays. Each "belén" is lovingly created by local artisans, associations, and community groups, reflecting their own unique interpretations of the nativity story. It’s a testament to the rich artistic talent here in Murcia.
One of the highlights this year is the Belén del Resucitado, located in Plaza Doctor Calero. Do note its opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm and then again from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Important to remember, it'll be closed on December 24th and 25th, as well as New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Another must-see is the Belén Paso Azul, conveniently located within the local shopping center and open Monday to Saturday from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. And for a slightly different flavor, check out the Belén Manchego on Calle Antonio Manzanera, offering evening viewings all week and adding Sunday morning slots for good measure.
What I particularly love about this route is its accessibility. Many of the nativity scenes are located in window displays, allowing you to admire them at almost any time of day or night without having to worry about opening hours. This is perfect for those who prefer to explore Águilas at their own pace, taking a leisurely stroll through the town and soaking up the festive atmosphere. It really adds to the charm and allows for spontaneous discoveries.
While Águilas is often associated with its beautiful beaches, maritime history, and of course, its vibrant Carnival celebrations, the Nativity Scene Route has really carved out its own niche as a must-see seasonal attraction. It brings a certain warmth and cultural richness to the winter months and gives you a genuinely lovely reason to visit the town during December and early January. If you're an expat living in Murcia or even a neighboring province, this route is a fantastic way to connect with local traditions and experience a truly authentic Spanish Christmas. It's a far cry from the commercialized chaos you find elsewhere and, in my opinion, all the more special for it. The displays are open throughout the holiday season, giving you plenty of time to plan a visit, whether it's a daytime outing or an evening wander. Highly recommended!
