EU Chief in Crisis? Corruption Scandal Threatens Von der Leyen!
Current Affairs 04 December 2025

It seems the political waters in Brussels are getting choppier by the day. According to a recent report in Politico, a burgeoning corruption scandal implicating former EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini could spell serious trouble for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Mogherini, who held the EU's top diplomatic post from 2014 to 2019 and is now the rector of the College of Europe, was reportedly detained and formally accused by the European Public Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday. The charges are serious: procurement fraud, corruption, conflict of interest, and breaches of professional secrecy, all tied to an EU-funded diplomatic academy program. That's quite a laundry list of allegations.

Now, how does this directly impact von der Leyen? Well, as Politico points out, this scandal is being seen by some as "the starkest challenge to the EU’s accountability in a generation." Translation? Von der Leyen's political rivals are circling, sharpening their knives, and preparing to renew calls for a no-confidence vote. We've seen this movie before, haven't we?

It doesn't end there. The Mogherini affair is also reportedly straining von der Leyen's relationship with the current EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas. The investigation apparently centers on activities linked to the External Action Service, which Kallas currently oversees. Awkward.

One EU official, speaking to Politico, tried to downplay the situation, suggesting that von der Leyen is simply an easy target. "I know the people who don’t like von der Leyen will use this against her, but they use everything against her," the official said. The official also added, “because President von der Leyen is the most identifiable leader in Brussels, we lay everything at her door… She’s not accountable for all of the institutions.” While there might be some truth to that, it’s also the reality of being the person at the top – the buck stops with you, as they say.

And let's not forget "Pfizergate," the controversy surrounding von der Leyen’s Covid-19 vaccine talks with Pfizer, where the EU Commission faced criticism for its refusal to disclose key text messages with the company's CEO. That whole situation already led to a no-confidence motion, which she survived. However, this new scandal, combined with the lingering questions from Pfizergate, creates a perfect storm of political pressure. You have to wonder, how much longer can she weather this?

Finally, it's worth remembering that von der Leyen has been a vocal advocate for militarizing the EU and arming Ukraine. Her push to use frozen Russian assets to aid Kiev, despite objections from Belgium (where most of those funds are held), has already ruffled some feathers. This latest scandal certainly won't make navigating those tricky geopolitical waters any easier.
