Okay, folks, brace yourselves. Vin Diesel is adding another layer to his already stacked "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots" project. Remember that movie Mattel Studios is making based on the classic boxing game? Well, Diesel, already slated to star and produce, is now officially penning the screenplay too. Yep, the man behind Dom Toretto is going to give Red Rocker and Blue Bomber their silver screen dialogue. Let that sink in for a moment.
Vin Diesel Writing Robots Movie?! What Will This M...
The initial announcement of Diesel's involvement as a star and producer through his One Race Films banner came back in April 2021. Now, nearly three years later, he's taking the reins on the script. We're talking about the live-action adaptation of a tabletop game where plastic robots duke it out until one's blockhead pops off. It's…ambitious, to say the least. I remember spending hours playing this game as a kid, and honestly, the narrative possibilities never exactly screamed "Oscar-worthy." But hey, never underestimate Hollywood's ability to surprise (or disappoint) us.
Robbie Brenner, President of Mattel Studios and Chief Content Officer, sounds positively thrilled about the whole thing. In a statement, she gushed about Diesel's "unmatched understanding of action, heart, and world-building." Bold words, considering we're talking about robots punching each other. She added that his "creative vision" is "bold, human, and deeply cinematic." I'm particularly curious about the "human" part. Are we talking robot existentialism? Robot love triangles? The possibilities, as baffling as they may be, are endless.
Diesel himself seems pretty pumped too. He stated he's excited to "expand the Mattel universe" (apparently, we're officially in the Mattel Cinematic Universe era, folks) and bring this "classic toy from my childhood to a modern audience." More intriguingly, he mentioned a story that "examines the role of competition in a world often measured by strength and dominance" and "dares to reveal the power of compassion at its core." Okay, Vin, I'm intrigued. Compassion from Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots? I'm here for it, if only to see how they pull it off.
Samantha Vincent of One Race will be joining the producing team, alongside Darian Greenbaum and Andrew Scannell from Mattel Studios. Apparently, "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots" had a previous incarnation at Universal, so it's been kicking around for a while. Diesel, for those keeping score at home, is repped by CAA, Linden Entertainment, Felker Toczek Suddleson McGinnis Ryan, and Greenburg Glusker. So, yeah, lots of people involved in making this robot-boxing movie a reality. Let's just hope it's more "Real Steel" and less...well, let's not even go there. One thing's for sure: this is going to be interesting.
