Last night was a wild one in college basketball, folks. Upsets, nail-biters, and standout individual performances – it had it all. If you blinked, you probably missed something. Let's break down the chaos.
College Basketball CHAOS! Top Teams Fall, OU Survi...
The biggest news? Two ranked teams went down. No. 22 Indiana and No. 6 Louisville both suffered surprising losses, proving once again that rankings are just that – rankings. They don't win you games. No. 9 Oklahoma, meanwhile, narrowly avoided joining the upset club, surviving a double-overtime thriller. And let's not forget Troy's improbable comeback. It was a night for the underdogs.
Let's start with Indiana's stumble. A trip to Minnesota has become something of a cursed pilgrimage for Big Ten teams. Last year, it was Oregon falling victim to the Golden Gophers in their inaugural Big Ten season. This year, history repeated itself, as Minnesota stunned No. 22 Indiana, handing first-year head coach Darian DeVries a harsh welcome to the conference. The Gophers took it, 73-64. I've always felt that the atmosphere in Williams Arena just breeds upsets; there's a certain energy there that's hard to quantify.
The victory marked Minnesota's first over Indiana since 2019, and it was a true team effort. Every single Gopher starter hit double-digit scoring, showcasing their depth and balance. Senior guard Cade Tyson led the charge with 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while senior guard Langston Reynolds added 17 points of his own, alongside five rebounds and three assists. Solid all-around performance. Junior Forward Bobby Durkin proved a force to be reckoned with on the court as well, recording four rebounds for the team. The team had nearly all players logging more than 37 minutes, showing that stamina was a major factor in winning the game.
The Hoosiers, unfortunately, couldn't match that level of consistency. Senior forward Sam Alexis provided some spark (10 points in 19 minutes), but they really struggled to find consistent scoring beyond him. Taylor Conerway led Indiana with 18 points, but it wasn't enough to offset a dismal 30% shooting performance from beyond the arc. You simply can't win consistently with numbers like that.
On the brighter side for Indiana fans, the women's team had a much better outing, cruising to a 71-53 victory over Western Michigan. And Senior guard Shay Ciezki continued her incredible season, dropping a game-high 26 points. It's amazing to see her development; she's become a legitimate star after being a solid, but not spectacular, player at Penn State and early in her Indiana career. Averaging 24.4 points per game, she's become a force.
Indiana wasn't alone in suffering an upset. No. 6 Louisville also fell, losing to No. 25 Arkansas, 89-80. This will undoubtedly send the Razorbacks climbing up the rankings. Louisville just couldn't get their shots to fall, while Arkansas capitalized with strong play off the bench. Another reminder that in college basketball, anything can happen on any given night.
