Okay, so get this: Alik Sakharov, a director who cut his teeth on some of the most visually stunning episodes of "Game of Thrones," is heading to Saudi Arabia. And not just for a vacation. He's slated to direct a major epic film called "Unbroken Sword," a project focusing on the life of Khalid ibn Al-Walid, a seriously legendary Arab military leader.
'Game of Thrones' Director's SHOCKING New Project ...
What's really interesting is where this movie is being filmed. "Unbroken Sword" will be the inaugural production at PlayMaker Studios, a brand-new film and TV production hub nestled within Qiddiya City. For those not in the know, Qiddiya City is this massive entertainment and tourism project Saudi Arabia is building just outside Riyadh. We're talking Six Flags, an F1 racetrack, and a stadium big enough to host FIFA World Cup matches. Seriously ambitious stuff. It’s like they're building Hollywood from scratch, but with a distinctly Saudi flavor.
The film itself is getting serious backing from the Saudi government, specifically the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) and Riyadh Season. Sela, a big entertainment and hospitality company, is producing. This isn't just a one-off thing either. Saudi Arabia is clearly making a concerted effort to become a major player in the film industry. They've got Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah (of "Bad Boys for Life" fame) working on a film called "7 Dogs," and Philip Noyce is directing an anti-drug film. So, yeah, they're all in.
Why all this sudden interest in filmmaking? Well, Saudi Arabia lifted a 35-year cinema ban in 2017, part of their "2030 Vision" plan to diversify the economy beyond oil. Building a film industry is a key part of that. PlayMaker Studios is seen as a cornerstone of that effort, a way to attract international talent and establish the Kingdom as a major film and TV hub in the Middle East and North Africa region. It's a pretty smart move, honestly.
Pre-production on "Unbroken Sword" is already underway, and they're planning to start filming in early 2026. Qiddiya Investment Company is promising a ton of support for productions filming there, including help with permits, logistics, and operations. Plus, they're offering a 40% production rebate, which is one of the most competitive incentives in the world. That's a pretty big draw. It's clear that they have a long term plan to incorporate post-production, VFX, music studios to make it a one-stop shop.
Qiddiya Investment Company's Managing Director, Abdullah Aldawood, put it pretty succinctly: PlayMaker Studios is "a cornerstone of Qiddiya City’s ambition." Richard Sharkey, who worked on "House of the Dragon" and "The Lord of the Rings," is producing, and he seems pretty excited about the scale and ambition of the project. It sounds like they're aiming to create something truly epic. Personally, I'm curious to see how this all unfolds. It could be a real game-changer for the film industry in the region. Only time will tell!
