After a decade of heartbreaking neglect and messy legal battles, the Hipódromo de la Costa del Sol in Mijas – once a jewel in Spain's equestrian crown – is finally looking at a potential comeback. It's a story that's been close to my heart, having seen the place in its heyday. The grandstands buzzing, the thundering hooves... it was quite a spectacle.
Mijas Hippodrome Rises From The Ashes! What Happen...
Opened back in 1999, the hipódromo quickly became Spain's go-to winter racing venue. I remember the crowds; sometimes upwards of 7,000 people packed into the stands to watch the races on that 1.7-kilometer track. It was glamorous, exciting, and a real boost for the local economy. Then, the 2008 financial crisis hit, and things started to unravel. Debts piled up – over €3 million, I believe – and by 2013, the races had stopped altogether. A real shame.
What followed was a sad decline. Abandoned and forgotten, the site became, as some locals dramatically put it, a "war zone." Vandalism was rampant, vegetation took over, and the buildings started to crumble. I visited a few years ago and honestly, it was depressing. Just the sheer scale of the decay was staggering. Estimates to simply restore it for racing alone are around €3.5 million. A hefty sum, to say the least.
But there's light on the horizon! The Mijas council has recently received several proposals – I hear it's around four – from private investors looking to breathe new life into the old hippodrome. And these aren't just about bringing back the horses (though that's a big part of it). The plans are ambitious, aiming to transform the site into a multi-faceted leisure hub.
Think equestrian events, training facilities, and competitions, all returning to the heart of the action. But that's just the start. The proposals also include integrating leisure activities: sports complexes, family attractions, even initiatives to boost tourism. The idea is to create a destination that appeals to a broad range of people, not just horse racing enthusiasts.
And let's not forget the bigger picture. The El Hipódromo neighborhood is booming, with luxury apartments and eco-villas popping up all over the place. Reviving the hipódromo would not only restore a local landmark but also give a major shot in the arm to Mijas's sports tourism economy. It's a win-win situation, really. Fingers crossed that one of these proposals gets the green light soon. It would be fantastic to see the Hipódromo de la Costa del Sol bustling with life once again.
