Watch out, Tesla Model Y – Nissan’s got a new contender coming for the crossover crown, and it's packing some serious heat. Dubbed the NX8, this electric and hybrid crossover is set to debut in China, and it looks like Nissan is pulling out all the stops to make a splash in the fiercely competitive EV market. I've been following Nissan's EV strategy for a while now, and this feels like a real turning point for them.
Nissan's Tesla Killer?! Dual-Motor Surprise Stuns ...
The NX8 isn't just another re-badged model; it's a purpose-built crossover with some eye-catching dimensions. At 4870 mm long, 1920 mm wide, and 1680 mm tall, with a 2917 mm wheelbase, it's right in the Model Y’s ballpark. That extended wheelbase should translate into plenty of legroom for passengers and a stable, comfortable ride, something that's crucial for families and those long road trips.
Nissan's design team clearly put in some work here. The NX8 sports their latest V-motion design language, but with a modern, electrified twist. The 2.4-meter LED light strip across the front is a bold statement, and the L-shaped headlights add a touch of aggression. But the real showstopper is the rear OLED stop panel. Apparently, it's made up of over 2000 individual elements! That's some serious tech. And the concealed door handles are a nice touch, helping to improve the aerodynamics and give it a sleek, futuristic look. You'll also be able to choose between 19 or 20-inch wheels, allowing for some personalization.
Now, let's talk power. The all-electric NX8 will come in two flavors: a single-motor setup with either 215 kW (292 hp) or 250 kW (340 hp). That's plenty of power for most drivers. But if you're not quite ready to go full-electric, the plug-in hybrid version might be more your speed. It combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a 195 kW electric motor, delivering a combined output of 148 horsepower from the engine. This should provide a good balance of performance and fuel efficiency, and it gives consumers options, which is always a smart move.
One of the most interesting features is the new-generation Yundun lithium iron phosphate battery. Nissan claims it can operate effectively in extreme temperatures, from -30 to +60 degrees Celsius. That's a big deal, especially for drivers in colder climates where battery performance can often suffer. Plus, it utilizes an 800V high-voltage platform and supports CATL's 5C ultra-fast charging technology. This means faster charging times and more efficient operation, making the NX8 a more practical EV option.
The NX8 tips the scales at between 2196 and 2245 kilograms, depending on the trim level. Top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h (around 112 mph), which is pretty standard for EVs these days. The big question mark, of course, is pricing. Nissan hasn’t announced that yet, but I expect them to be aggressive in order to compete with the Model Y and other established players. If they can hit the sweet spot with pricing and deliver on the promised performance and features, the NX8 could be a major disruptor in the Chinese EV market – and potentially beyond.
