Ashes Annihilation! England Crumbles: Is All Hope Lost?!
Sports 07 December 2025

The Ashes dream is rapidly turning into a nightmare for England. After a brutal eight-wicket defeat to Australia in the second Test at the Gabba, they now trail 2-0 in the five-match series. Let's be honest, things look bleak.

Ashes Annihilation! England Crumbles: Is All Hope ...

This loss, wrapped up in less than six days of cricket, has understandably sparked serious questions about England's chances of clawing back and claiming the urn. It’s a long road ahead, and the Aussies seem to be enjoying their home advantage immensely.

There were glimpses of resistance, I'll give them that. Captain Ben Stokes, showing some much-needed grit, top-scored with a dogged 50 off 152 balls. He was really trying to set the example after the team’s overall lackluster showing. Stokes, alongside Will Jacks (who chipped in with a valuable 41 from 92 deliveries), managed a 96-run partnership for the seventh wicket – the most substantial partnership England has mustered in the entire series so far. It’s moments like those you cling to, but unfortunately, they were fleeting.

The resistance crumbled when Smith, the Aussie captain, took an absolute screamer of a catch at first slip to dismiss Jacks. That triggered a collapse, with England losing their last four wickets for a paltry 17 runs, ending their innings all out for 241. Stokes fell to Neser, Atkinson was caught out too, and Carse edged to slip, handing Neser his first-ever five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Honestly, it was tough to watch.

Set a mere 65 to win, Australia practically strolled to victory in just 10 overs. Atkinson managed to snag the wickets of Head and Labuschagne, but let's face it, the game was already done. The writing was on the wall.

Now, England faces a Herculean task: winning all three remaining Tests to regain the Ashes. History isn't on their side, as they've never managed to achieve that feat after being 2-0 down against Australia. The pressure is immense, and Stokes' men are teetering on the edge of delivering what could be one of the worst performances by an England team Down Under in recent memory. It’s starting to feel like a long way to go for the travelling fans.

With the third Test looming on December 17th, England needs a dramatic turnaround. They need to figure out how to drastically improve their performance before heading to Adelaide. Meanwhile, Australia, as the current holders of the Ashes, only needs a draw to retain the urn. That prospect is definitely hanging over proceedings as thousands of England fans prepare to make the journey to Melbourne and Sydney. Things could get very ugly out there.

Adding insult to injury, the hosts are set to be reinforced by the return of captain Pat Cummins from injury and the likely return of off-spinner Nathan Lyon. England's failure to capitalize on Australian absences at the start of the series has proven to be a very costly mistake. They are now staring at the consequences.

While not mathematically eliminated, it’s hard to imagine how England can pull this around, given their dismal performances and poor recent record in Australia. This defeat marks their 17th consecutive match without a win in Australia, with 15 of those ending in losses. It also represents England's 10th defeat in 14 away Tests and their eighth loss in 15 overall, dating back to September 2024. The Gabba continues to be a venue of disappointment for England, who haven't tasted victory there since 1986. Ouch.
