Yemen Erupts: Is This Peaceful Bid The Last Hope For Peace?!
Current Affairs 02 January 2026

Hadramawt, Yemen – It’s been a tense few weeks in Yemen, and the situation just took another potentially explosive turn. The Saudi-backed governor of Hadramawt province announced on Friday a "Peaceful operation" aimed at reclaiming military bases recently snatched up by the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a group supported by the United Arab Emirates. Now, "peaceful operation" might sound reassuring, but in a conflict as deeply entrenched and multi-faceted as Yemen's, it's a phrase that demands a hefty dose of skepticism.

For those not following the twists and turns of Yemeni politics, the STC is a separatist movement pushing for an independent south Yemen. They’ve been steadily gaining ground, particularly in the south, often clashing with forces loyal to the internationally recognized government, which, of course, is backed by Saudi Arabia. It's a proxy war playing out on Yemeni soil, and the civilians are caught in the crossfire. I remember reporting on the humanitarian crisis there years ago, and sadly, it seems to only be deepening.

The governor’s declaration comes after weeks of simmering tensions, with the STC consolidating its control over key military sites in Hadramawt. This is a particularly strategic area, given its oil reserves and coastline. Losing control here is a significant blow to the Saudi-backed government, and it's no surprise they’re trying to regain it. The big question is, can this really be a "Peaceful" operation?

Frankly, given the history of this conflict, I have serious doubts. The STC isn't likely to simply hand back these bases without a fight. They’ve invested time and resources, and their backers in the UAE aren’t known for backing down easily. We've seen this pattern repeatedly throughout the war: rhetoric of peace followed by escalations of violence. There is little trust, and a lot of deeply entrenched positions on all sides.

The coming days will be crucial. Will the governor’s forces attempt to negotiate a handover? Will they resort to force? Will the STC dig in and defend their gains? The answers to these questions will determine whether Hadramawt descends further into chaos or whether, against all odds, a path to de-escalation can be found. One can only hope that cooler heads prevail, and that the suffering of the Yemeni people, already immense, doesn't get even worse.
