Calpe's 2026 Tourism Plan: Will it Save the Town?!
Current Affairs 02 January 2026

Calpe, Spain – The picturesque coastal town of Calpe is already setting its sights on 2026, outlining an ambitious tourism strategy aimed at boosting visitor numbers and extending the all-important tourist season. The Department of Tourism has just released its first-quarter trade fair schedule, signaling a proactive approach to both nurturing existing markets and planting seeds in new ones. Essentially, Calpe is doubling down on what works while exploring fresh opportunities.

Calpe's 2026 Tourism Plan: Will it Save the Town?!

The campaign’s opening salvo will be fired at Matka 2026 in Helsinki, Finland, running from January 15th to 18th. Matka, the undisputed king of tourism fairs in the Nordic region, is expected to draw a massive crowd, and Calpe is planning a dedicated presentation within the Costa Blanca pavilion. Last year, Matka pulled in over 56,000 visitors, so it's a valuable opportunity to connect with a travel-hungry audience.

Just days after wrapping up in Helsinki, the Calpe team will be jetting off to Madrid for Fitur, a major event on the Spanish tourism calendar, from January 21st to 25th. This is a critical opportunity to showcase the latest seasonal offerings and connect with domestic tour operators and travel agents.

February sees a shift in focus, with the spotlight turning to cycling and hiking enthusiasts at the Fiets en Wandelbeurs fair in Utrecht, Netherlands (February 14th-16th). This is a smart move, in my opinion. Calpe's stunning coastal paths and mountainous terrain make it a perfect destination for active travelers. Targeting this niche market, emphasizing healthy travel and outdoor pursuits, could yield significant results. Plus, the Dutch are known for their love of cycling!

The grand finale of the first-quarter push will be at ITB Berlin, from March 3rd to 5th. Celebrating its 60th anniversary, ITB is a behemoth of a global tourism event. Representatives from virtually every corner of the planet will be there, making it a prime opportunity for Calpe to raise its profile and attract potential clients, partners, and media attention, especially for its ongoing campaigns in Germany. I can imagine the networking opportunities there are immense.

Calpe is riding a wave of success. In 2024, the town welcomed nearly 300,000 tourists, and summer 2025 saw record-high occupancy rates. These numbers speak volumes about Calpe's enduring appeal. The Costa Blanca region, as a whole, is a major player in Spanish tourism, attracting almost 8 million international visitors in 2024. This makes these strategic promotional efforts all the more vital to maintain that momentum and grow beyond the peak summer months. Diversifying the appeal of this popular destination is key for the future.
