New Year’s ISIS ‘inspired’ terror attack thwarted – FBI

New Year's Terror Attack Thwarted! What the FBI Ju...

Just as many of us were breathing a sigh of relief, welcoming in the new year and hoping for peace and prosperity, news has emerged of a potential tragedy narrowly avoided. The FBI, working alongside local law enforcement, announced they disrupted what they're calling an ISIS-inspired terror attack planned for New Year's Eve in North Carolina. It’s a chilling reminder that even during times of celebration, vigilance is key. And, frankly, it makes you wonder what other threats are lurking that we *don't* hear about.

The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Christian Sturdivant, allegedly intended to unleash a violent attack on unsuspecting civilians at a local grocery store and a fast-food restaurant. According to reports, his arsenal was set to include a firearm, knives, and even hammers. The sheer brutality of the planned attack is frankly horrifying. I mean, hammers? It speaks to a level of depravity that’s hard to comprehend.

The FBI statement from Charlotte indicates that Sturdivant was "directly inspired" by the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). US Attorney Russ Ferguson, during a press briefing, made it very clear just how close we came to disaster. "He was preparing for jihad and innocent people were going to die. And we’re very, very fortunate they did not," Ferguson stated. This reinforces the ongoing threat posed by radicalized individuals, even years after ISIS's territorial defeat in the Middle East. It's a virus that mutates and spreads online.

The good news, if there is any in this situation, is that Sturdivant’s meticulous planning ultimately led to his downfall. He encountered two undercover officers during his preparations, which ultimately exposed his intentions. According to the Department of Justice, a search warrant executed at his residence uncovered handwritten documents, including one chillingly titled "New Year's Attack 2026." This document laid out his plan to stab as many civilians as possible, aiming for a body count of 20 to 21.

The DOJ also stated that Sturdivant had been communicating with an online "covert employee," whom he believed to be an IS member. He allegedly proclaimed himself "a soldier" of IS and declared his intent to "do jihad soon," revealing details of the planned attack. He even planned to acquire a firearm before carrying out his deadly spree. You have to wonder about the role of these online networks in radicalizing young people – it’s a serious problem that needs addressing. US Attorney General Pam Bondi rightly acknowledged the successful collaboration between federal and local law enforcement, stating it "saved American lives from a horrific terrorist attack." Sturdivant is currently in federal custody, facing a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
