The morning commute on the N-332 between Benissa and Calpe took a turn for the worse Saturday morning as a Car and a bus collided in what authorities are calling a significant accident. The incident, which occurred around 7:58 a.m. at kilometer 174, involved a rather brutal head-on, side-impact collision that snarled traffic and left several individuals with injuries. I actually drive that stretch of highway pretty regularly, and it can get pretty hairy, especially during peak hours.

Firefighters from the Benissa station were the first to arrive on the scene, quickly followed by backup from Denia. Thankfully, according to the Provincial Fire Consortium, nobody was trapped inside either vehicle. That's always the first thing you worry about in these situations. The immediate priority was securing the area and beginning to assess the extent of the damage and injuries.
The response was a truly coordinated effort. The Civil Guard, Traffic Civil Guard, local police from both Benissa and Calpe, and a Basic Life Support (BLS) unit all converged to manage the situation. Let's not forget the road maintenance crews who are essential for clearing debris and ensuring the road is safe to use again. It's a testament to the professionalism of these services that they can work together so efficiently, especially in stressful circumstances.
While the collision certainly caused a headache for commuters, the good news is that the injuries sustained appear to be relatively minor. Several bus passengers and the driver of the Car were treated for contusions. A 31-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman required a bit more attention and were transported by the BLS unit to Dénia Hospital for further evaluation. Thankfully, it seems no complex rescues were necessary, which is always a huge relief.
Inevitably, traffic was significantly impacted while emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage. The N-332 is a crucial artery connecting the towns along the Costa Blanca, and any disruption causes ripples. Delays were particularly noticeable for those heading towards Calpe or Benissa, and honestly I bet some people were late for work. Hopefully, everyone involved makes a speedy recovery and things get back to normal soon.
