Title: Benidorm Breathes Easier: New "Xixo" Trails and Enhanced Fire Safety in El Moralet Park

Benidorm is taking proactive steps to protect its green spaces, and its residents, with the completion of the third phase of a crucial Fire prevention project in El Moralet park. The project, which includes the creation of 3.5 kilometers of new walking trails, is more than just a recreational upgrade; it's a strategic move to reduce wildfire risk in this popular urban park.

Mayor Toni Pérez, along with council members José Ramón González de Zárate and Francis Muñoz, recently toured the site to inspect the progress. The focus has been on clearing areas previously choked with dense undergrowth – think pines, olives, and even some impressively sized eucalyptus trees – that posed a significant fire hazard. It’s amazing what a little (or a lot) of clearing can do!

Funded in part by the European Union's NextGeneration-EU program, this initiative tackles more than just overgrown vegetation. The clearance efforts have unearthed a piece of local history: an old reservoir that once stored water from a nearby stream. It's a reminder of the park's past, now revealed thanks to this forward-thinking project.

But the improvements don't stop there. The project also includes the creation of two new entrances to the park from Cuba Avenue, a welcome addition for residents, especially those near the Miguel Hernández school. Moreover, the park’s fire protection is being bolstered with new thermal cameras that can quickly detect rapid temperature changes, providing an early warning system for potential fires. These cameras complement the existing network, creating a more robust safety net.

For Mayor Pérez, this is about more than just Fire prevention; it’s about providing accessible green spaces for both residents and visitors. "This project not only provides new leisure and recreational spaces… but also safeguards a valuable green area close to the urban environment," he stated. I think that hits the nail on the head. Parks like El Moralet are vital for quality of life, especially in a bustling tourist destination like Benidorm.

Looking back, Pérez recalled that the entire area of El Moralet park was once privately owned land, acquired by the council and opened to the public. This investment, he emphasized, secures public green space for current and future generations, bringing the total urban greenery available to a remarkable one million square meters. That's a significant commitment to environmental stewardship.

With a budget of €434,808.85 for this phase alone, the project demonstrates a serious commitment to sustainable tourism and community well-being. The new "Xixo" trails and enhanced fire safety measures in El Moralet park are a testament to Benidorm's dedication to creating a safer, more enjoyable environment for everyone.
