Well, folks, hold onto your hats! The Turkish automotive market just blew the roof off in 2025, smashing all previous sales records. We're talking a staggering 1,368,400 cars and light commercial vehicles sold. It's a banner year, and the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) has the numbers to prove it.
Turkey's 2025 Car Sales Shatter Records! Guess the...
The ODMD data paints a clear picture: car sales alone jumped over 10% to 1,084,496 units, while light commercial vehicles weren't far behind with a nearly 10% increase to 283,904 units. December's performance was the cherry on top, adding a solid 12.55% boost to an already impressive year. It's good news for the Turkish economy, no doubt.
But here's where things get interesting. Remember when sedans were king of the road in Turkey? Those days are gone. SUVs have officially taken the throne, commanding a whopping 61.9% of the market. Sedans are now relegated to a distant second at 22.8%, followed by hatchbacks at 14.4%. I guess everyone wants that extra ground clearance and perceived safety, or maybe it's just the style factor.
Interestingly, smaller cars – A, B, and C segments that benefit from lower taxes – still make up the bulk of sales, accounting for 82.7% of the market. And get this: automatic transmissions are practically the only option now. Manuals? Forget about it. They hold a measly 5% share. It really shows you how convenience has taken over, doesn't it?
Gasoline cars still lead the fuel type race with 47% of the market, but the real story is the surge in hybrid and electric vehicle sales. Electric cars alone jumped to 191,960 units, capturing 17.7% of the market. And it's not just the eco-conscious crowd either. Powerful electric models, those boasting over 160 kW, are seeing massive growth, indicating that people are actually buying these cars for performance, too. Things are changing, and changing fast!
While the ODMD didn’t release the top 5 brands data, we know that domestically produced models are dominating the sales charts. The Renault Clio, in particular, finished the year as Turkey's most sought-after car. That's quite a feat.
ODMD Chairman Ali Haydar Bozkurt is optimistic about the future, highlighting the automotive industry's impressive $42 billion in exports. He's predicting a market level of 1.5 million units down the road and expects 2026 to mirror 2025's success. Let's hope his predictions come true and that new production investments continue to boost employment in the sector. It's definitely something to watch closely.
