He claims it will house “the world’s largest supercomputer,” boasting a staggering 2 gigawatts of computing muscle. That's enough to make even seasoned tech observers raise an eyebrow.

However, this massive investment isn’t without its detractors. While politicians are touting economic benefits, xAI's growing footprint in the Memphis area is drawing increased scrutiny. Concerns are mounting about the potential environmental impact, particularly regarding air pollution emanating from these supercomputer facilities. The NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center have both raised red flags, pointing out the proximity of these facilities to predominantly Black communities in Memphis.

Local opposition is also gathering steam. The Safe and Sound Coalition, a Southaven-based group, has launched a petition demanding a complete shutdown of xAI’s operations in the area. As of Thursday afternoon, the petition had already amassed over 900 signatures – a clear indication of the anxieties brewing within the community. It's that grassroots level concern that often gets overlooked in these big tech stories, but it's arguably the most important.

In an attempt to allay these fears, the Mississippi governor's office released a fact sheet emphasizing xAI's commitment to environmental responsibility. But will words on paper be enough to calm worried residents? It remains to be seen. Governor Reeves, during the announcement, personally thanked Musk and highlighted the potential for hundreds of permanent jobs, thousands of indirect subcontracting jobs, and a significant boost to local tax revenue. To sweeten the deal, DeSoto County and Southaven have reportedly agreed to substantial property tax reductions for xAI.

The ambitious timeline sees xAI starting data center operations in Southaven as early as next month. It's a rapid pace, and one that suggests Musk is determined to solidify xAI's position in the AI race. Whether the benefits will truly outweigh the potential environmental and social costs, however, is a question Southaven – and Memphis – will be grappling with for the foreseeable future.
