Aleppo Ceasefire SHOCK! What Will Happen Next?!
Current Affairs 09 January 2026

Syria has declared a ceasefire in Aleppo after renewed and frankly, pretty intense clashes between government forces and Kurdish-led militias. I’ve seen reports and videos coming out of the city, and it paints a bleak picture. It seems like things are constantly on the verge of boiling over there, and this is just the latest example.

Aleppo Ceasefire SHOCK! What Will Happen Next?!

The Syrian Defense Ministry made the announcement, stating the ceasefire covers three key Aleppo neighborhoods: Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh, and Bani Zeid. The truce was set to begin at 3 a.m. local time this Friday. At the same time, a curfew has been imposed by the Aleppo security command in several areas with a majority Kurdish population. It's a complicated situation to say the least.

What sparked this latest round of violence? Well, fighting between the Syrian army and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) – who, remember, control significant portions of northern and eastern Syria – broke out last week. The scale of the displacement is staggering. Estimates suggest around 100,000 people have fled their homes in the wake of the fighting. One hundred thousand! It's a humanitarian crisis unfolding in real time.

Reports indicate that government troops were trying to push into Kurdish-held neighborhoods. Damascus has been demanding the withdrawal of what they call "militia groups," accusing the SDF of stirring up trouble. They claim the SDF violated a previous agreement, further complicating the already fragile peace.

The SDF, for their part, is pointing the finger right back at Damascus. They argue that their fighters withdrew "openly and in a documented manner" months ago, handing control of those neighborhoods over to government forces. The SDF, a long-standing ally of the US in the conflict, claims they are now being "besieged" by the army. It’s a classic case of he-said, she-said, with real people caught in the middle.

Videos coming out of Aleppo show heavy shelling and what appears to be Syrian troops deploying drones against the SDF. On the other side, you see Kurdish forces reportedly ambushing government troops, using sniper rifles and machine guns from buildings. The whole situation is just devastating.

It's worth remembering that back in April, the Syrian government reached an agreement with Kurdish leaders in Aleppo granting them a certain degree of autonomy under Damascus’ rule. However, a larger deal intended to reintegrate Kurdish-led civil and military structures into the central government by the end of 2025 has hit a major snag. Blame is being traded back and forth. Let's hope this ceasefire holds, but given the history, it's hard to be optimistic.
