Oscar buzz meets the magic of Disney! The Oscar-shortlisted short film, *The Pearl Comb*, has just landed on Disney+ in Europe, bringing its unique brand of gothic historical drama to a wider audience. But that's not all – adding even more prestige to the project, two-time Academy Award nominee Miranda Richardson and Oscar-nominated producer David Lancaster have signed on as executive producers. Talk about a vote of confidence!

Disney+ Nabs 'Pearl Comb'! Richardson & Lancaster ...

This isn't some overnight success story, either. *The Pearl Comb* has been making waves on the film festival circuit, racking up awards, including a couple of wins at the British Short Film Awards. It boasts a solid cast too, featuring Beatie Edney (you might remember her from *Highlander*), Clara Paget (*Too Much*), and Simon Armstrong, familiar to *Game of Thrones* fans.

The film itself sounds fascinating. We're transported to 1893 England, where a fisherman's wife stumbles upon a cure for tuberculosis. Sounds like a straightforward medical triumph, right? Wrong! A skeptical doctor, seemingly determined to keep women out of medicine, investigates her work and uncovers the… shall we say… *unconventional* source of her power. Inspired by the true stories of pioneering women in medicine in the UK, the film promises a blend of gothic chills and historical accuracy. I'm already intrigued by the premise!

David Lancaster, the producer behind *Whiplash* and *Nightcrawler*, is clearly a fan. He describes *The Pearl Comb* as a "fabulously freaky fable," even suggesting a Robert Eggers-meets-Guillermo del Toro vibe. High praise indeed! Lancaster further noted the film's surprising twists and turns, its blend of myth and mermaid lore, and its overall engaging narrative. "This twisted period piece surprises at every turn," he said, "blending myth and mermaid, empathy and evil, and building to a crackling finish." It definitely sounds like a wild ride.

It’s interesting to see Disney+ embracing these Oscar-caliber short films. It's a great way to expose audiences to different kinds of storytelling and introduce them to up-and-coming filmmakers. *The Pearl Comb* joins other shorts like *A Friend Of Dorothy*, starring Miriam Margolyes and Stephen Fry, and *Retirement Plan*, with Domnhall Gleeson, on the streaming platform across Europe. So, if you're looking for something a bit different to watch, a film that's both thought-provoking and visually striking, *The Pearl Comb* might just be your next discovery.
