Grok Image Ban! Musk's Bot Sparks Deepfake Fury - What Happens Next?!
Current Affairs 09 January 2026

Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, is facing a bit of a PR nightmare. After a global outcry over the generation of some seriously disturbing, sexually explicit deepfakes, the company has slapped restrictions on its image generation capabilities. The move? Limiting access to image generation and editing features solely to paying subscribers. But, and this is a big but, European authorities aren't exactly showering Grok with praise for this Band-Aid solution.

Grok Image Ban! Musk's Bot Sparks Deepfake Fury - ...

Let's be clear: we're talking about a situation where Grok, accessible via Musk's X platform, was being used to doctor images in pretty awful ways. Think women depicted in bikinis and other suggestive poses, and, even more disturbingly, some researchers are claiming that some images appeared to depict children. This, understandably, set off alarm bells everywhere, leading to government condemnation and investigations across the globe. The internet has become a scary place, it is important to take the correct precautions.

So, Grok's response on Friday was to start blocking image alteration requests with a message essentially saying, "Pay up if you want to play." While we don't know exactly how many people are paying for Grok, reports are suggesting that the number of explicit deepfakes being generated has indeed dropped since the change. But again, the core issue persists: Grok is still granting image requests, and the potential for misuse remains.

Of course, X hasn't exactly been forthcoming with official statements, at least not yet. But the European Union's executive Commission isn't mincing words. "This doesn't change our fundamental issue," said Thomas Regnier, a spokesman. "Paid subscription or non-paid subscription, we don't want to see such images." You've got to hand it to them, it doesn't sound like they're backing down anytime soon. The EU had previously slammed Grok for its "illegal" and "appalling" behavior.

And it's not just the EU. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's spokesperson, Geraint Ellis, called Grok’s move "not a solution," going so far as to say it's "insulting to the victims of misogyny and sexual violence." He emphasized that X seems capable of moving quickly when it suits them, and that "all options are on the table." France, Malaysia, India, and even Brazil are all taking a closer look at X's practices, adding to the pressure cooker situation Musk and his team find themselves in.

It's worth remembering that Grok launched in 2023, and the image generator, "Grok Imagine," came with a "spicy mode" right off the bat. Given Musk's positioning of Grok as a more edgy alternative to other chatbots, coupled with the sheer visibility of images on X, this was perhaps a recipe for disaster from the start. As investigations continue and governments threaten action, it's clear that Grok's image problem is far from resolved. It really does make you think, where is the line of what AI can do?
