Alright, comedy fans, buckle up! Season 51 of "Saturday Night Live" is officially underway, and it's already shaping up to be a season of fresh faces and surprising departures. As someone who's spent way too many Saturday nights glued to NBC, I'm both excited and a little apprehensive about the changes.
SNL Season 51: Shocking Cast Changes?! What Will H...
The show kicked off with Bad Bunny pulling double duty as host and musical guest, a move that definitely brought the energy. But that's just the beginning. Looking ahead to January 2026, we've got a trio of first-time hosts lined up: "Stranger Things" star Finn Wolfhard, the multi-talented Teyana Taylor of "One Battle After Another" fame, and Alexander Skarsgård, known for his work in "Pillion." It's always interesting to see how actors known for more dramatic roles handle the live sketch comedy format.
And before we get to January, we've still got some exciting shows to look forward to this fall! Amy Poehler, a "Parks and Recreation" legend and SNL alum, graced the stage back on October 11th, accompanied by Role Model making his musical guest debut – a nice nod to the show's original premiere date. Plus, the incredibly talented Sabrina Carpenter is scheduled to host and perform on October 18th, marking her second time as a musical guest but her first time leading the show. I'm personally really excited for that one; I think she's got the comedic chops to really shine.
But it's not all about who's new. There's been a major shakeup in the cast. Beloved long-time cast member Bowen Yang has officially left, and that's a real loss. Heidi Gardner, another veteran after eight years, has also departed, and Ego Nwodim surprisingly exited after seven seasons despite initial reports suggesting she would remain. The departures definitely sting; it felt like they were all just hitting their stride! The show, however, has also welcomed some new blood, including Ben Marshall from the comedy group Please Don’t Destroy. The other two members, Martin Herlihy and John Higgins, are reportedly staying on as a writer and leaving, respectively. Marshall will be joined by Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Kam Patterson, and Veronika Slowikowska, so it's a pretty substantial injection of new talent.
The move of Please Don't Destroy is a very smart one. They've already contributed some genuinely hilarious sketches to the show, so bringing one of them on board as a cast member feels like a natural evolution. I'm eager to see how these new cast members integrate into the existing dynamic and what kind of fresh perspectives they bring to the table. Season 51 is a gamble, that is for sure; but with the right combination of new talent and established comedic sensibilities, there's a chance it could be something really special.
