Trump Eyes Greenland: Will He Actually Buy It?!
Current Affairs 10 January 2026

Well, folks, it looks like President Trump is at it again, this time setting his sights on a rather chilly piece of real estate: Greenland. Apparently, the U.S. isn’t just interested in maintaining its existing military footprint on the island; Trump wants the whole thing, lock, stock, and barrel. And he's not mincing words about it, either.

Trump Eyes Greenland: Will He Actually Buy It?!

According to recent reports, the President has asserted that the U.S. needs to acquire Greenland, "whether they like it or not," to prevent potential future occupation by, you guessed it, Russia or China. He even hinted at possible military action if a deal can't be reached amicably. I mean, come on. This isn't some game of Risk! It's real people and a real country we're talking about.

“You defend ownership. You don’t defend leases. And we’ll have to defend Greenland. If we don’t do it, China or Russia will. Not going to happen,” Trump reportedly stated. Now, while the U.S. does have a military presence on the island under a 1951 agreement, Trump seems to think that just isn't enough. He wants ownership, plain and simple. It's giving me serious Manifest Destiny vibes, but with icebergs instead of prairies.

The kicker here is that Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, home to 57,000 people who probably have their own ideas about their future. It's not exactly ripe for the taking. And reactions from leaders in Copenhagen and across Europe have been, shall we say, less than enthusiastic. They’ve asserted their right to Greenland, and rightly so.

Apparently, Trump and his administration have been exploring various strategies to bring Greenland under U.S. control, ranging from deploying more troops (always a crowd-pleaser) to offering Greenlanders substantial payments to encourage secession from Denmark and integration with the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio apparently floated the idea of just buying Greenland outright as the "leading option." I'm not sure what's more shocking, the idea itself or the fact that someone actually said it out loud.

And the fallout? Well, it's not pretty. Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Britain, and Denmark issued a joint statement affirming that only Greenland and Denmark can determine their relationship. They warned that forcing Greenland away from Denmark could "permanently" fracture the Western military alliance. This is not exactly a recipe for international harmony, folks.

Even though Trump claims to support NATO, he insists that "NATO has to understand" his position on acquiring Greenland. Good luck with that, Mr. President. Rubio is scheduled to meet with Danish officials next week to discuss the matter. I can only imagine how that conversation will go. Popcorn, anyone?

In an interview published Thursday, Trump stated his desire to possess the *entirety* of Greenland rather than simply expanding the U.S. presence under the current treaty. It's a bold move, to say the least. And while I can't predict the future, I have a feeling this is one saga that's just getting started.
