13,000 Irish Passports REJECTED?! Is YOURS One of Them?!
Current Affairs 10 January 2026

Hold on to your hats, folks, especially if you're an Irish passport holder! A bit of a travel snafu has emerged just as folks are getting back into the swing of things after the holidays. Apparently, nearly 13,000 Irish passports issued over the Christmas and New Year period have a printing error, and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is urgently asking for them back.

13,000 Irish Passports REJECTED?! Is YOURS One of ...

Specifically, the affected passports were printed between December 23, 2025, and January 6, 2026. The culprit? A software update during production, which, in a rather unfortunate oversight, caused the country code "IRL" to be omitted from the machine-readable zone (MRZ). That's the bit that gets scanned at airport eGates and by border officials.

Now, before you start panicking about identity theft or some grand conspiracy, the DFA is keen to stress that this isn't a security issue. Your passport is still a genuine document for identification. The problem is that this missing code means your passport technically doesn't comply with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). This could trigger problems at automated checkpoints, airline check-ins, and even with manual border checks. Imagine getting stuck in line because of a printer error! Not exactly how you want to start your vacation.

The good news is the Passport Service seems to be on top of things. They've already apologized for the inconvenience – a necessary gesture, no doubt – and have notified border authorities worldwide through ICAO, as well as Irish border control. This proactive step should help minimize disruptions, but it's still vital to check your passport if you think you might be affected.

So, how do you know if you need to send yours back? Check the issue date on the personal details page (the one with your photo). If it falls within that December 23rd to January 6th window, you need to take action. Here's the address to return your passport (and passport card, if you have one): Passport Return – Customer Care, Passport Service, 42-47 Lower Mount St, Dublin 2 – D02 TN83, Ireland.

I know, sending your passport back is a pain, especially if you have travel plans. But trust me, it's better to deal with this now than to face potential delays or even being turned away at the border. The DFA says they're prioritizing these cases to get things sorted quickly, and honestly, in my experience, they're usually pretty efficient. You can find the latest official updates on ireland.ie or dfa.ie/passports. So, check those dates, folks, and get those passports in the post ASAP. Happy travels (eventually)!
