Iran Summons UK Envoy: Embassy Flag Incident Sparks Fury!
Current Affairs 12 January 2026

Tensions are flaring between Iran and the UK after an incident at the Iranian embassy in London over the weekend. According to Iranian state-linked media, the UK ambassador has been summoned in response to the Iranian flag being torn down during a protest. It's a pretty bold move, and you can bet Tehran wasn't happy about it.

Iran Summons UK Envoy: Embassy Flag Incident Spark...

The dramatic scene unfolded on Saturday as members of the Iranian diaspora gathered outside the embassy in Kensington. These folks were showing solidarity with the ongoing protests happening back in Iran. Then, things got a little more...direct. One activist actually scaled the embassy wall, took down the flag of the Islamic Republic, and then, to add insult to injury, proudly displayed the pre-1979 royal flag – the one with the lion and sun – from a balcony. That particular flag is a potent symbol of opposition to the current Iranian government, often brandished by exiled Iranians. Talk about sending a message.

The embassy, clearly keen to project an image of stability, quickly replaced the state flag. They even posted on X, formerly Twitter, stating that "Iran’s flag is flying high.” A bit of damage control, perhaps? You can see the video of the incident going viral on social media, with one tweet capturing the moment someone described as "Spiderman" took down the flag. Whether it was Spiderman or not, it definitely made a splash.

According to the semi-official IRNA News Agency, the British ambassador was summoned. The Foreign Ministry claimed the embassy was "disrespected" by this flag incident. Alireza Yousefi, a bigwig in the Iranian Foreign Ministry focused on Western Europe, reportedly lodged a "strong protest" with the UK diplomat. It sounds like a pretty tense conversation.

However, there's a bit of he-said, she-said going on here. While the UK Foreign Office denied the ambassador, Hugo Shorter, was formally summoned, ITV sources are saying he "had a meeting" at the Foreign Ministry. So, maybe it wasn't an official "summoning," but something definitely went down. Either way, it's clear the UK is being pressured to address Iran's concerns.

And what about the police? Well, London police confirmed that arrests were made following the incident. The charges included aggravated trespass and assault on an emergency worker. Seems like some people got a little carried away.

This whole thing is happening against a backdrop of serious unrest in Iran. Protests kicked off late last year due to a collapse of the national currency. This led to big price hikes on essentials, and people are understandably angry. The demonstrations have spiraled into riots and clashes with security forces, and the reported death toll is sadly in the hundreds. The flag incident, therefore, isn't just a random act of vandalism. It's a symbol of the deep-seated opposition to the current regime and a reflection of the turmoil gripping the nation. We'll have to see how this diplomatic spat plays out, but it's certainly added another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation.
