Manchester United's managerial merry-go-round continues, and this time, it looks like Michael Carrick is the frontrunner to take the reins, at least temporarily. Sources close to the club indicate that United chiefs are eager to have someone in place by Wednesday when the players are due back in training. While nothing is set in stone, talks with the 44-year-old Carrick appear to be progressing nicely.
Carrick to Man Utd?! Shocking Turn After Manager S...
Carrick, of course, is no stranger to Old Trafford. He graced the pitch 316 times in the Premier League for the Red Devils, becoming a firm fan favourite. He even had a brief spell as caretaker manager back in 2021, following Ole Gunnar Solskjær's departure. Remember that? He actually did pretty well, winning two and drawing one. It was a short but sweet tenure that ultimately paved the way for Ralf Rangnick's ill-fated interim stint.
The urgency stems from the recent sacking of Ruben Amorim, who was shown the door on January 5th after just 14 months in charge. To be fair, things haven't exactly been smooth sailing at United lately. And let's not forget the FA Cup defeat at the hands of Brighton on Sunday. Darren Fletcher, who's been filling in, oversaw that loss, which followed a draw against Burnley. It's safe to say the club desperately needs some stability, even if it's just temporary.
Now, some might argue that Carrick doesn't have the managerial pedigree of a seasoned veteran. His only permanent role was at Middlesbrough, where he did guide them to the Championship play-offs in the 2022-23 season, only to lose to Coventry. He ultimately lost his job after narrowly missing out on the top six in subsequent campaigns. But he knows the club, he knows the players, and he understands the United ethos – something that seems to be sorely lacking in recent years.
It's worth remembering that Carrick served as a first-team coach under Solskjær for quite some time. That experience, coupled with his playing career at United under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, could give him an edge. Whether he can steady the ship and guide United towards a more promising future remains to be seen. One thing's for sure: whoever takes on this job, even in the short term, has a monumental task ahead. And given the "fragile" state of the squad, as some are calling it, it could be a tough ride, potentially leading to their fewest games in a season since 1914. Talk about pressure!
