The nominations are in, and the 57th NAACP Image Awards are shaping up to be quite the show! Ryan Coogler's latest, the horror flick "Sinners" starring Michael B. Jordan, is leading the film pack with a whopping 18 nominations. That's quite a feat, and it definitely puts it in a strong position heading into the awards ceremony. It's always interesting to see which films resonate with both audiences and award committees, and "Sinners" clearly has done just that.

Not far behind, though still a significant distance, is Spike Lee's "Highest 2 Lowest," which managed to snag a respectable nine nominations. Lee is, of course, a legend, so it’s no surprise to see him in the mix. But it seems Coogler's "Sinners" is truly the one to beat this year. The sheer volume of nominations suggests that it’s struck a chord, perhaps because it's a genre piece that doesn't shy away from exploring complex social themes – something the Image Awards often celebrate.

Individually, Teyana Taylor and Kendrick Lamar, both recognized for their work on "One Battle After Another," are neck-and-neck with six nominations apiece. They're also both vying for the prestigious Entertainer of the Year award, alongside Michael B. Jordan, Doechii, and Cynthia Erivo, who herself boasts a solid four nominations. That's a pretty stacked lineup, and honestly, it's tough to predict who will take home the top prize. All of them are incredibly talented and have made significant contributions to the entertainment landscape this year. The Entertainer of the Year award is a true testament to impact and influence.

This year, the Image Awards are expanding their horizons with two brand-new categories: Outstanding Literary Work – Journalism and Outstanding Editing in a Motion Picture or Television Series, Movie, or Special. That brings the total number of categories to a staggering 93! It’s good to see the awards evolving and recognizing even more aspects of Black creativity and achievement. The inclusion of journalism, in particular, feels timely and important, given the vital role Black journalists play in shaping our understanding of the world.

According to NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson, the theme for the 2026 Image Awards is "We See You." I like that. It’s simple, powerful, and speaks to the core mission of the awards – to uplift and celebrate Black excellence in all its forms. As Johnson said, these awards are about affirming Black creativity, excellence, and humanity across every space where our stories are told. And let's face it, representation matters, and the Image Awards play a crucial role in ensuring that Black voices are heard and celebrated.

Mark your calendars! The winners in select categories will be revealed during a two-hour CBS special airing live on Saturday, February 28, at 8 p.m. ET (and tape-delayed at 8 p.m. PT). For those who can't wait, the winners in the non-televised categories will be announced during ceremonies from Monday, February 23, to Thursday, February 26. It's going to be an exciting week, and I, for one, am looking forward to seeing who takes home the honors.
