You know, in the often-grueling world of game development, where crunch culture and long hours can be the norm, it's genuinely refreshing to hear stories like this. Shift Up, the South Korean studio behind the hit game Stellar Blade, is making headlines again, but not for pushing out another patch or announcing new DLC. Nope, this time it's for something far more positive: showering its employees with lavish gifts.
Stellar Blade Devs DROP JAW-DROPPING Bonus! Apple ...
Word on the street (or, more accurately, according to the South Economic Daily) is that Shift Up has just handed out a pretty sweet package to each of its roughly 300 employees. We're talking about a pair of Apple AirPods Max, an Apple Watch, and a cash bonus of around $3,400. All told, that's roughly $4,000 per person. Now, I don't know about you, but that sounds like a pretty darn good day at the office.
But here's the thing: this isn't a one-off. Shift Up seems to have made a habit of generously rewarding its team. Last year, around this time, they gifted everyone a PS5 Pro (which, let's be honest, is pretty awesome) and another $3,400 cash bonus. It's like Christmas in June! Then, after Stellar Blade hit the 3 million sales mark, bam! Nintendo Switch 2s for everyone. And earlier in 2024? Pre-paid credit cards worth nearly $7,000. Before that, iPhone 14s. It’s a trend, people!
The studio has openly stated that these bonuses are aimed at keeping its talented team happy and motivated. And frankly, it's hard to imagine a better way to do that. While some companies might offer beanbag chairs and free snacks, Shift Up is going all out with high-end tech and cold, hard cash. It’s a bold strategy, Cotton, let's see if it pays off…or continues to pay off, given their track record.
A big part of this generosity probably stems from the success and recognition of Shift Up's CEO, Hyung-tae Kim. He recently received the Presidential Commendation at the Korean Content Awards for his contributions to the industry, specifically his work on games like Goddess of Victory: Nikke and, of course, Stellar Blade. It's clear he values his team and recognizes their role in that success.
With Stellar Blade 2 already in development and a collaboration with Level Infinite on Project Spirits, it looks like Shift Up is poised for even greater things. And if they continue to treat their employees like this, it's hard to see them slowing down anytime soon. Maybe more studios should take a page from their book – happy developers, after all, tend to make great games. Just a thought.
