Paris is buzzing with cinematic energy as the 28th Unifrance Rendez-Vous kicks off, and one film already making waves is Pierre Salvadori's "Vénus Electrificata." Goodfellas, the well-respected sales agency, has snagged the worldwide rights to this quirky period romance, and I, for one, am definitely intrigued. Period pieces are always a gamble, but with this cast and creative team, it sounds like it could be something special.
Goodfellas' 'Venus Electrificata': Steamy Romance ...
The film boasts a seriously impressive cast. Pio Marmaï, who has been popping up everywhere recently (I especially enjoyed him in "The Three Musketeers"), stars as Antoine, a painter stuck in a rut. He's battling creative block and a serious drinking problem, all stemming from the death of his wife, Irène. Anaïs Demoustier, fresh off "The Count of Monte Cristo," plays Suzanne, a sideshow performer who pretends to be a clairvoyant. Antoine, desperate for a connection with his late wife (played by the talented Vimala Pons), seeks her out. Gilles Lellouche is also on board, adding even more star power to the mix.
Salvadori, you might recall, directed the charming romantic comedy "The Trouble With You" a few years back. This new project certainly sounds different, but he's clearly got a knack for character-driven stories, and the screenplay, co-written with Benjamin Charbit and Benoît Graffin from an idea by Rebecca Zlotowski and Robin Campillo, suggests a layered and emotionally resonant narrative. It's nice to see established writers collaborating on a project like this, it definitely adds another layer of interest.
Production is being spearheaded by Philippe Martin of Les Pelléas Films, the very same company behind Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or winner, "It Was Just An Accident." That’s a serious pedigree. With Sandrine Dumas, Jacques-Henri Bronckart, Tatjana Kozar, and Salvadori himself also co-producing, it seems like a real labor of love. French distribution rights have been secured by Diaphana, who will be releasing the film as "La Venus Electrique," while O’Brother has the Benelux rights.
Goodfellas is currently showing a promo reel at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous, and the buzz is definitely building. The film is still in post-production, with a target festival debut slated for late spring or early summer. I'm personally hoping it makes it to Cannes! Beyond "Vénus Electrificata," Goodfellas is also working to finalize sales for Claire Denis’ "The Fence" and Arnaud Desplechin’s "Two Pianos," so they're keeping busy. Their upcoming slate also includes intriguing titles like Cristian Mungiu’s "Fjord," Hanna Bergholm’s "Nightborn," and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s "Sheep in the Box." It's clear they've got an eye for quality, and I'll be keeping a close watch on "Vénus Electrificata" as it moves towards release.
