Grok AI Deepfake Scandal: X Bans Trigger Global Panic!
Current Affairs 13 January 2026

The fallout from Grok AI's foray into the world of Deepfakes is escalating rapidly, with international bans and investigations piling pressure on Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter). Indonesia and Malaysia have become the first nations to outright ban the AI, citing a surge in non-consensual sexual deepfakes, a move that underscores the gravity of the situation.

“The government views non-consensual sexual Deepfakes as a serious violation of human rights, dignity, and the safety of citizens in the digital space," declared Indonesian Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid. Her words are a stark reflection of the very real harm these AI-generated images can inflict, especially on women.

Malaysia's Communications and Multimedia Commission echoed these concerns, pointing to what they called "repeated misuse" of Grok to generate obscene and sexually explicit content. They confirmed notices were issued to X Corp. and xAI earlier this month, demanding that they step up their safeguards. It seems like the pleas for responsible AI development are falling on deaf ears, at least in some corners of the tech world.

The anger and frustration are palpable, and it’s not just governments weighing in. Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister, Ebba Busch, a victim herself, pulled no punches. "This is not spicy. This is illegal. This is appalling. This is disgusting. I can confirm we are very seriously looking into this matter," she stated, her voice laced with fury.

Busch recounted her experience in a video on X, explaining that she was "involuntarily undressed" by Grok. She rightly pointed out the violation of personal autonomy, emphasizing the right of women to decide when, where, and how they present themselves. As a parent, her concern for her daughter's future in this digital landscape is particularly resonant.

The United Kingdom isn't sitting idly by either. Their independent online safety watchdog has launched an investigation into X, focusing specifically on the sexualized imagery generated by Grok. The potential consequences for X are severe, with fines reaching up to £18 million or 10% of its global revenue.

It's not just Europe and Southeast Asia taking action. India has also demanded immediate action from X, accusing the platform of "gross misuse" and giving them a 72-hour ultimatum. Even France has expanded an existing investigation into X, initially focused on Holocaust denial, to include these disturbing deepfakes. The pressure is mounting, and X's reputation is taking a serious hit. This is a global problem, and it’s going to take a global effort to rein in the dark side of AI.
