Okay, crime drama fans, get ready. Netflix just announced that Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are composing the original score for their upcoming series, "Detective Hole," based on Jo Nesbø's wildly popular Harry Hole novels. If you're familiar with Nesbø's work, you know this series is going to be dark – like, *really* dark – and Cave and Ellis are pretty much the perfect duo to set that mood. I can already hear the haunting melodies in my head.
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis Netflix Collab: You Won't...
Cave and Ellis aren't exactly newcomers to the soundtrack scene. These guys are veterans, having lent their distinct sound to films like "The Proposition," "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," and "Wind River." Their music has a way of getting under your skin, creating this sense of unease and suspense that's just perfect for a gritty crime thriller. Think brooding landscapes and morally ambiguous characters – that's their sonic territory.
For those unfamiliar with the source material, "Detective Hole" stars Tobias Santelmann as Harry Hole, a troubled and unconventional Oslo detective. He's not your typical hero, let me tell you. He's battling his own demons while trying to stop a serial killer and take down a corrupt cop, Tom Waaler, played by Joel Kinnaman. The supporting cast is stacked too, with names like Pia Tjelta and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal rounding out the roster. Produced by Working Title and Universal International Studios, it looks like Netflix is pulling out all the stops on this one.
It's clear the creative team is thrilled to have Cave and Ellis on board. In a statement, Cave himself said, "We loved working on this adaptation. Harry Hole’s murky, morally-complex world has been brought to life in all its darkly brutal glory, and it was an honour to work with the legendary Jo Nesbo.” I think that sums it up nicely. “Darkly brutal glory.” That’s the vibe we're going for.
Nesbø, the mastermind behind the books, is equally enthusiastic. He said, "Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are masters at conjuring mood and tension, and their music is the ideal companion to Harry Hole’s brooding, enigmatic journey through the shadows of Oslo. Their music has always been a soundtrack to my writing process. To have them now scoring the world of Harry Hole feels both surreal and absolutely right.” Honestly, I have to agree. It feels like a match made in… well, a very dark and atmospheric heaven.
The nine-episode series is set to premiere on Netflix on March 26th. Mark your calendars, folks. If you're a fan of dark crime dramas, morally complex characters, and the haunting melodies of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, this is one you won’t want to miss. I know I'll be watching. Prepare to be hooked, and maybe a little bit disturbed. Just the way we like it, right?
