Trump's Greenland Power Grab: Unacceptable?! What Happens Next?
Current Affairs 14 January 2026

Former President Donald Trump is back at it again, stirring up international controversy with his renewed insistence that the United States needs to control Greenland. Forget diplomacy, Trump wants NATO to strong-arm the semi-autonomous Danish territory into American hands, or so his social media pronouncements suggest. And, predictably, things are getting... complicated.

Trump's Greenland Power Grab: Unacceptable?! What ...

In a characteristically blunt post on Wednesday, Trump doubled down on his long-held belief that Greenland is vital to U.S. national security. He went so far as to say that NATO should be "leading the way" in acquiring the Arctic island, stating that anything less is "unacceptable." The reasoning? Apparently, Greenland in American hands makes NATO "far more formidable." The post has, unsurprisingly, set off alarm bells from Nuuk to Copenhagen and beyond.

Trump's renewed interest conveniently coincides with Vice President JD Vance hosting Danish and Greenlandic officials in Washington this week. While the White House hasn't explicitly threatened a military takeover – yet – the mere suggestion is causing serious consternation. Remember, Trump previously floated the idea of buying Greenland outright back in 2019, an offer that was swiftly and firmly rejected by Denmark. It seems that didn't deter him much.

Down in Nuuk, Greenland's capital, the atmosphere is tense. International journalists are swarming, trying to gauge the mood. And the mood, it seems, is one of disbelief and defiance. "The island is not for sale," is the common refrain. One 22-year-old student, Tuuta Mikaelsen, expressed the hope that American officials would simply "back off." Good luck with that, Tuuta.

Greenland's Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, was even more emphatic. Speaking at a news conference in Copenhagen, he stated unequivocally: "If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark. We choose NATO. We choose the Kingdom of Denmark. We choose the EU." It doesn’t get much clearer than that, does it?

The strategic importance of Greenland is undeniable, even if Trump's specific justifications are, shall we say, debatable. As climate change melts the ice, Greenland offers potentially shorter trade routes between Europe and Asia. More importantly, it's sitting on a treasure trove of critical minerals essential for modern electronics, a fact that surely hasn’t escaped Trump’s attention.

While Trump claims Greenland is crucial for the U.S.'s missile defense program and to counter Russian and Chinese naval activity, many Greenlanders, like heating engineer Lars Vintner, suspect the real motivation is resource extraction. "He just wants the minerals," Vintner said dismissively. Denmark, meanwhile, has offered to expand existing U.S. military bases on the island. Perhaps that's a compromise Trump should consider, if he's truly interested in security and not just... well, Greenland's untapped potential.
