Apple is making a big play for gamers, and it looks like they're serious about it. The tech giant just announced that "Civilization VII" is headed to iPhone, iPad, and Mac as an "Arcade Edition," alongside a whole host of other gaming goodies, including a nostalgic trip down memory lane with "Retrocade." As someone who spent countless hours glued to a computer screen building my own empires in previous Civ installments, this is pretty exciting news, albeit with a few potential caveats.
Civ VII on iPhone?! Gamers Stunned by Surprise App...
The announcement came jointly from Apple and 2K Games, revealing "Sid Meier’s Civilization VII Arcade Edition." What's interesting is that Behaviour Interactive is developing this version, with guidance from Firaxis Games, the folks who birthed the Civilization franchise in the first place. This seems to suggest a slightly different approach, potentially tailored for the mobile and Arcade platform. Crucially, it appears this version will be exclusive to Apple Arcade, meaning you'll need a subscription to get your world-domination fix.
While described as delivering the "authentic Civilization experience," eagle-eyed gamers will notice a few potential limitations based on the App Store listing. Apparently, the Arcade Edition *won't* receive any of the downloadable content planned for the other, presumably PC and console, versions. That's a bit of a bummer. It also sounds like post-launch updates might be delayed, or even excluded altogether. And perhaps most disappointingly for some, the listing hints at single-player only. No hotseat multiplayer on a long car ride? That’s a shame.
However, let's not be too hasty to dismiss this. 2K Games has generally been pretty good about supporting their franchises with updates and new content, so who knows what might happen down the line? "Civilization VII" is scheduled to launch on February 5th for iPhone, Mac, and iPad. Mac users, take note: you'll need an M1 chip or later. Sorry, Intel Mac owners – you’re out of luck. Also, no mention of Apple TV support, which feels like a missed opportunity.
But wait, there's more! Alongside "Civilization VII," Apple is dropping other Arcade releases on the same day, including "Felicity’s Door" and "I Love Hue Too+." And then there's Retrocade. This digital arcade is packed with classics like Asteroids, Bubble Bobble, Centipede, and Galaga. The coolest part? Retrocade is launching on Vision Pro, allowing you to play these games on simulated arcade cabinets in a 3D virtual environment. Talk about a blast from the past! Honestly, the Vision Pro Retrocade experience might be worth the price of admission alone for some of us older gamers. Apple is definitely betting big on immersive gaming, and this latest announcement shows they're willing to play hard to win.
