Well, folks, it's official. Amazon's live-action 'God of War' series has found its Kratos, and the casting choice is actually pretty darn inspired, if I do say so myself. Get ready for Ryan Hurst to embody the Ghost of Sparta! You probably know him best as Opie from 'Sons of Anarchy' – a role he absolutely nailed, by the way. He was also recently in Netflix's 'The Abandons.' But here's the real kicker: Hurst *also* voiced Thor in 2022's 'God of War Ragnarök'!
God of War: Thor Actor Becomes Kratos! Fans Stunne...
Yes, you read that right. The guy who brought the booming voice of the God of Thunder to life in the game is now stepping into the sandals (or, you know, whatever Kratos wears) of the stoic, rage-filled Spartan warrior. It's a fun little twist, especially considering the original Kratos in the recent games was brought to life so wonderfully by Christopher Judge. Hurst even snagged a BAFTA nomination for his Thor performance, so it's clear he's got the acting chops. I wonder if he'll bring a little of that thunderous energy to the role – or maybe channel a bit of Opie's quiet strength.
For those unfamiliar, Amazon's adaptation will focus on the Norse saga of 'God of War,' specifically drawing inspiration from the 2018 game and 'Ragnarök.' This means we'll be seeing Kratos and his son, Atreus, embark on their journey to scatter the ashes of Atreus' mother. Expect plenty of emotional moments, epic battles, and stunning landscapes, if the games are anything to go by. The rest of the cast is still under wraps, which is leaving me anxiously waiting to see who they find to play Atreus! Finding the right chemistry between Kratos and his son will be crucial to this adaptation's success.
Amazon is clearly confident in this project, having already greenlit two seasons. Ronald D. Moore, the mastermind behind 'Outlander' and 'Battlestar Galactica,' is on board as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, which is definitely reassuring. Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Boy Productions are all co-producing, which means there's a lot of talent and resources being poured into this. Filming is reportedly scheduled to start in Vancouver this March, so we should be seeing some set photos and teasers soon, hopefully. I, for one, am eagerly anticipating the first glimpse of Hurst in full Kratos gear!
'God of War' will be joining the ranks of other video game adaptations on Amazon Prime, including 'Like a Dragon: Yakuza' and the wildly successful 'Fallout.' Clearly, Amazon is betting big on bringing beloved gaming franchises to the small screen. Let's hope 'God of War' can live up to the hype and deliver a truly epic and worthy adaptation. I have to admit, after seeing what they did with Fallout, my expectations are high. But, hey, no pressure, right, Amazon?
