Another year, another Afcon heartbreak for Mohamed Salah. The Liverpool star watched his Egyptian dream crumble once again, this time at the hands (or rather, the foot) of his old teammate, Sadio Mane. Senegal's 1-0 victory in Wednesday's semi-final was a bitter pill to swallow, especially given Egypt's clear ambition to finally lift the trophy they last held in 2010.
Mane Crushes Salah AGAIN! Will His AFCON Nightmare...
The game itself, played in Tangier, Morocco, wasn't exactly a classic. A largely uneventful affair was decided by Mane's powerful strike late in the second half. You could see the disappointment etched on Salah's face as the final whistle blew. He knew this was a huge opportunity missed.
Mane, ever the professional, offered words of support to his former Liverpool colleague. "It is not easy for him - but still best of luck," he said to BBC World Service. "He did everything to carry his team until now. Unfortunately one of us had to [lose]. I'm happy [to be] in the final." Class act, that Mane.
This defeat feels particularly poignant when you consider the recent history between Salah and Mane at the Afcon. Remember the 2021 final? Mane scored the winning penalty to deny Salah and Egypt their crown. Then, just a few months later, it was Mane again, converting the decisive spot-kick to send Senegal to the World Cup after Salah uncharacteristically blasted his penalty over the bar. It's a narrative that's becoming almost painful to watch unfold for Salah.
Salah has conquered club football, winning everything imaginable with Liverpool. He's got the Premier League titles, the Champions League trophy – the lot. But that elusive continental title with Egypt continues to evade him. As he said himself after their quarter-final win against Ivory Coast, "Nobody, even in Egypt, wants to win this trophy more than me...This is the title I am waiting for."
So, the big question is: how many more chances will Salah get? He's 33 now, with over 110 caps for his country. He could realistically feature in the 2027 and 2028 tournaments. However, with his long-term future at Liverpool uncertain after that public spat with Jurgen Klopp at Elland Road, this could be his last Afcon as a Premier League superstar. That's a sobering thought.
Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel summed it up perfectly: "He has been waiting. We are all fans of Mo Salah...He has won everything at club level but everyone wanted him to win this title." Indeed, it's a sentiment shared by many. Former Morocco midfielder Hassan Kachloul delivered a blunt warning, suggesting Salah is running out of time to lead Egypt to their eighth Afcon title.
For now, Salah will have to dust himself off and return to Liverpool. But you can bet that the burning desire to lift that Afcon trophy will continue to fuel him. Whether he gets another shot to realize that dream remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: it won't be for lack of trying.
