Trump's Venezuela Call: What He Said Will SHOCK You!
Current Affairs 15 January 2026

Donald Trump's recent foreign policy decisions have been nothing short of surprising, but his latest move involving Venezuela has really turned heads. The former (and perhaps future?) president has announced details of his first-ever phone call with Venezuela's interim President, Delcy Rodriguez, a conversation he's characterizing as remarkably positive, especially considering the recent… events.

Trump's Venezuela Call: What He Said Will SHOCK Yo...

The call, which took place on Wednesday, is the first known direct contact between Trump and a Venezuelan leader since the controversial US military operation that led to the capture of Nicolas Maduro back in January. You remember that one – the raid that reportedly left at least 80 people dead, a truly devastating situation.

"We had a call, a long call," Trump told reporters, never one to shy away from a bit of self-congratulation. "We discussed a lot of things, and I think we’re getting along very well with Venezuela." He even went as far as to describe Rodriguez as a "terrific person." It's quite the turnaround, given the previous administration's rhetoric about Venezuela.

Trump doubled down on the optimism in a Truth Social post, stating that "tremendous progress" was being made. He specifically mentioned "Oil, Minerals, Trade and, of course, National Security" as key areas of discussion. His post ended with a promise: "This partnership between the United States of America and Venezuela will be a spectacular one FOR ALL. Venezuela will soon be great and prosperous again, perhaps more so than ever before!" Bold claims, indeed. We've heard similar pronouncements before, so it remains to be seen if they'll materialize.

Rodriguez, for her part, described the conversation as "long, productive and courteous." She indicated that they discussed a bilateral agenda aimed at benefiting both countries, suggesting a significant shift in tone after previously condemning foreign interference. This is a pretty substantial change of pace, considering her earlier defiant statements against foreign influence.

However, let's not forget the underlying context. The Trump administration has been crystal clear about its primary goal: securing control over Venezuelan oil production and exports. Actions speak louder than words, and the US military and Coast Guard have been busy intercepting vessels suspected of illegally transporting Venezuelan oil. And let's not forget Secretary Wright's rather blunt statement about controlling Venezuela's oil sales "indefinitely." While framed as being for the benefit of both countries, it's difficult to ignore the implications of such control.

Ultimately, this newfound "partnership" raises a lot of questions. Is it a genuine attempt to stabilize Venezuela, or a calculated move to secure access to its resources? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: this is a developing story, and we'll be watching closely.
