Estimated US Price Tag for Greenland Revealed: A Cool $700 Billion?

Remember when the idea of the US buying Greenland seemed like a bizarre fever dream? Well, it seems like it's back on the table, and with a hefty price tag attached. According to NBC, citing scholars and former officials familiar with acquisition plans, securing the icy territory could cost American taxpayers a staggering $500 to $700 billion. Yes, you read that right.

Greenland's SHOCKING Price Tag REVEALED! Will US B...

Apparently, former President Trump is once again pushing hard to bring Greenland, which is currently an autonomous territory within Denmark, under U.S. control. He's even suggested he'll get it "one way or another," hinting, worryingly, at the potential for using force. It's giving me flashbacks to elementary school arguments over playground equipment.

Trump's latest rationale involves his proposed Golden Dome missile defense system. He claims Greenland is vital for it, arguing on Truth Social that Russia and China pose a threat to the island. He even took another jab at Denmark's defense capabilities, scoffing, "Two dogsleds won't do it!" You know, the typical Trump flair.

Sources inside the government suggest that while buying Greenland or striking a deal involving financial aid in exchange for a larger U.S. military presence are the most likely options, the possibility of using force hasn't been entirely ruled out. This aggressive stance has, unsurprisingly, ruffled feathers in both Denmark and Greenland, with authorities repeatedly stating the island is not for sale and condemning Trump's rhetoric as a threat to Danish sovereignty.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenland Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt even traveled to Washington recently to get a better handle on Trump's intentions. While Rasmussen described their meetings with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance as “constructive,” he admitted the fundamental disagreement persists. “It’s clear that Trump has this wish of conquering Greenland,” he stated. Conquering? Strong word, even for this situation.

Despite the tension, both Rasmussen and Motzfeldt made it clear that any change to Greenland's sovereignty is a non-starter. However, they did agree to form a "high-level working group" with the U.S. to explore potential avenues for cooperation. Whether this group can find common ground remains to be seen.

Adding another layer of complexity, Greenlanders themselves are overwhelmingly opposed to joining the U.S. A Berlingske poll from last year revealed that 85% are against the idea. And it's not just a Greenland thing – an Economist-YouGov poll this week indicates that over two-thirds of Americans also oppose acquiring Greenland. So, it seems like Trump is fighting an uphill battle on multiple fronts. At this point, you have to wonder, is Greenland really worth all this trouble? And that kind of money? Only time will tell.
