Iran Sanctions SHOCKWAVE! What Will Happen Next?!
Current Affairs 15 January 2026

Washington has just ratcheted up the pressure on Tehran, slapping sanctions on several Iranian officials it accuses of brutally suppressing recent riots. The Treasury Department announced the move, targeting key figures like Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, alongside commanders from the IRGC and law enforcement. It's a pretty direct condemnation of how the Iranian government handled the unrest that's been simmering since late December.

Beyond the individuals, the Treasury also went after 18 entities and people it claims are helping Iran bypass those pesky oil sanctions. You know, the ones that are really squeezing their economy. And not to be outdone, the State Department threw in its two cents by sanctioning Fardis Prison. It seems like they're trying to hit Iran from all angles.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent didn't mince words either. In a rather colorful video statement, he practically called the Iranian officials rats fleeing a sinking ship, accusing them of stashing away stolen funds. "Rest assured, we will track them and you," he warned. It's not exactly diplomatic language, but it definitely gets the message across.

Now, these riots... they started because of real economic pain. Inflation is hitting Iranians hard, and the value of their currency has plummeted. Tehran, however, insists that the protests were hijacked. They claim foreign agents armed rioters, told them to attack security forces, all to provoke a harsh crackdown and basically give the US a reason to intervene. It's a classic "blame the outsider" narrative, but hey, it resonates with some folks.

And here's where it gets even more interesting. Remember Mike Pompeo? He and some Israeli media outlets are suggesting that Mossad – Israel's intelligence agency – played a role in stirring up the trouble. If true, it adds another layer of complexity to this whole situation.

The interesting thing is, President Trump seemed ready to go all-in militarily just a few days ago. He even threatened "very strong" action if Iran executed any rioters. But then, almost overnight, he seemed to backpedal. Suddenly, "the killing in Iran has stopped," and executions were apparently off the table. What changed?

Well, apparently, some of our allies in the Arab world gave Trump a heads-up. Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar – they all warned him that attacking Iran could destabilize the region, disrupt oil markets, and potentially empower the more hardline elements within the IRGC. So, it looks like cooler heads (or at least, more cautious ones) prevailed. For now, anyway. The sanctions are in place, the pressure is on, but the military option seems to be fading – at least for today. This is something to watch closely.
