Anthony Joshua, the British heavyweight boxing star, is back in the gym. It's a welcome sight after what must have been an incredibly difficult few weeks for the former champion. Just 19 days after a devastating car accident in Nigeria claimed the lives of two close friends and members of his team, Joshua seems to be finding solace and strength in training.
Joshua's Back! Mental Strength Therapy Fuels Shock...
The accident, which occurred on December 29th near Lagos, involved the vehicle Joshua was traveling in colliding with a stationary truck. While Joshua sustained minor injuries, the crash tragically took the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif 'Latz' Ayodele, both integral parts of his inner circle. It's the kind of news that makes you pause and remember the human element behind the celebrity, the athlete.
Joshua, 36, recently shared a video on Snapchat showing him working out, accompanied by the simple but powerful message: "mental strength therapy." The timing is significant. This return to training comes not long after his victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19th, a high point quickly followed by the low of the fatal accident during what should have been a relaxing holiday back in Nigeria.
In a moving statement, Joshua reflected on the profound loss. "I didn't even realise how special they are," he said. "I'll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men. 100% it's tough for me, but I know it's even tougher for their parents." It's a sentiment that resonates with anyone who has experienced the sudden loss of loved ones – that feeling of not fully appreciating someone until they're gone.
The question now, of course, is what's next for Joshua's boxing career? Promoter Eddie Hearn is understandably cautious. He's emphasized the importance of Joshua’s complete recovery – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual – before any decisions are made. As Hearn told Sky Sports, Joshua needs time to heal before considering his future in the ring. "He will need his time physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually before he makes a decision on his future," Hearn stated. It's a responsible and compassionate approach.
Hearn added that he believes Joshua will want to return to boxing eventually, but stressed that the decision rests solely with the fighter. "That is the only voice you should listen to in that respect and we'll give him his time to make that decision and heal," Hearn said. For now, the focus is rightly on Joshua's well-being, and his return to the gym, while seemingly small, is a powerful indicator of his resilience and determination to overcome this difficult chapter.
