Here's Every Star Wars Movie Project Kathleen Kennedy Just Mentioned as She Departs as Lucasfilm Chief — With No Mention of That Standalone Rey Film
As Kathleen Kennedy prepares to hand over the reins as president of Lucasfilm, it's been a time of reflection and future-casting. She's recently outlined a number of "Star Wars" projects supposedly in development, giving fans a glimpse – or perhaps a tease – of what might be coming down the pipeline. But one project was conspicuously missing from her remarks: the previously announced standalone film centered on Rey Skywalker. Remember that one?
Star Wars SHOCK! Kennedy OUT? Rey Film DEAD?! What...
Unveiled with a good bit of fanfare by Kennedy herself at Star Wars Celebration 2023 (which feels like eons ago), this project was supposed to feature Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey, and follow her efforts to establish a new era for the Jedi Order. The excitement was palpable. So, what happened?
"We're pretty far along," Kennedy stated vaguely, regarding the overall slate of "Star Wars" films announced back then. "These are things, as you can imagine, certainly looking at what Dave [Filoni]'s been doing with Ahsoka, that'll be at least six, seven years building to what it is we're going to be doing in a movie. As [for the project being made by] Sharmeen, we've been working on that for a couple years already." Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, of course, was slated to direct the Rey film.
To jog your memory, Kennedy had previously described the Rey movie as taking place 15 years after "Rise of Skywalker." "[Rey is] attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order based on the books, based on what she promised Luke," she said. A compelling premise, right? But now, radio silence. This absence is particularly striking considering the development troubles surrounding other projects. As *The Hollywood Reporter* pointed out late last year, Rey's future had become a source of internal debate, with several competing visions vying for screen time.
While Simon Kinberg (of *X-Men: Dark Phoenix* infamy) is reportedly developing a new trilogy, Obaid-Chinoy's standalone movie has apparently faced significant setbacks, including the departure of writer Steven Knight. Speaking of Kinberg, Kennedy did revisit his trilogy this week, although even *that* seems to be experiencing turbulence. She called it a "trilogy," yes, but whether it's actually ready for prime time remains highly uncertain. It's all sounding a bit… precarious.
"Mangold's is really on the back burner as is Soderbergh's," Kennedy admitted, listing other "Star Wars" projects that have seemingly failed to launch. James Mangold, director of *Logan*, also had his "Star Wars" project announced at Celebration 2023, but details are thinner than a Jawa's chances of winning a beauty contest. And then there’s Steven Soderbergh’s *The Hunt for Ben Solo*, reportedly nixed by Disney president Bob Iger, much to the chagrin of many fans. (Kennedy coyly suggested it could still happen if someone was "willing to take a risk.")
“I think the ones by Taika and Donald are still somewhat alive,” Kennedy continued, referring to Taika Waititi (of *Thor: Love and Thunder* fame) and Donald Glover's respective "Star Wars" ventures. “That’s going to really be up to the new team to figure out.” In the meantime, the fate of Rey Skywalker – and Daisy Ridley's return – hangs in the balance, a question mark swirling in the vastness of space, like so much Star Wars lore.
