CAIRO – A new Palestinian committee, tasked with the unenviable job of governing Gaza under, shall we say, close U.S. supervision, held its inaugural meeting here in Cairo on Friday. The head of the committee promised swift action to address the frankly disastrous conditions on the ground in the war-ravaged territory. It's a tall order, to put it mildly.
Gaza Under US Control?! Shocking Cairo Meeting Rev...
The formation of this committee is, of course, the brainchild of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who apparently envisions this group as the driving force behind Gaza's reconstruction and governance in the wake of the devastating two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas. I have to admit, I’m a little skeptical, but let's see what they can do.
"The Palestinian people were looking forward to this committee, its establishment and its work to rescue them," said Nabil Shaath, the committee’s leader, in an interview with Egypt’s state-owned Al-Qahera News following the meeting. Optimistic words, but the real test will be if they can deliver tangible improvements to the lives of Gazans.
Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10th and Israeli troops withdrew behind what’s being called the "Yellow Line," thousands of displaced Palestinians have begun the agonizing process of returning to what remains of their homes. It's a scene of devastation, and the scale of the challenge is truly immense.
In a social media post on Thursday, Trump himself stated, "I am backing a newly appointed Palestinian Technocratic Committee, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, supported by the Board’s High Representative, to govern Gaza during its transition." This committee, apparently, will manage the daily affairs of Gaza under the watchful eye of a "Board of Peace," led by Trump himself. The specifics of this board, and who will actually be on it, remain shrouded in mystery. Color me surprised.
Meanwhile, as this new committee began its work, grim realities continued to unfold in the West Bank. Mourners gathered Friday to grieve the death of 14-year-old Mohammad Na’san, a Palestinian boy killed by Israeli forces. The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed he was the first child killed by the army in the occupied West Bank this year. Residents claimed Israeli forces deployed stun grenades and tear gas in what they described as an unprovoked attack. The Israeli military, predictably, issued a statement claiming the incursion followed Palestinians throwing rocks at Israelis and setting tires ablaze. The village council head, Ameen Abu Aliya, painted a very different picture, describing gunfire directed at civilians. Al-Mughayyir, the village where this happened, has become a real flashpoint, with much of its agricultural land now under Israeli military control. It’s a tragic situation that continues to escalate.
And tragically, the violence didn’t stop there. Two children, a 7-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, were also killed in Gaza on Friday. The circumstances surrounding their deaths are still unclear. It's just one more layer of heartbreak in a region already overflowing with it.
