For Expats in Spain, Flying Back to the UK in 2026 is About to Get Even Easier

UK Flights Just Got CHEAPER?! Expats in Spain Will...

Living the expat life in Spain is, for many, a dream come true. Sunshine, siestas, delicious food – what's not to love? But, of course, even paradise has its occasional need for a trip back home. Whether it's for a family wedding, a much-missed Sunday roast, or just a quick visit to the grandkids, that connection to the UK remains vital. And, luckily, it’s about to get a whole lot easier to maintain.

Get ready, because 2026 is shaping up to be a banner year for Spain-UK travel. Airlines are gearing up to launch new routes and beef up existing connections, making it smoother than ever to hop between the two countries. We're talking about more options, more direct flights, and less of that dreaded connecting-flight hassle.

The big players – we're talking Wizz Air, easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2, and British Airways – have all announced route expansions for the 2026 season. The real kicker is the increase in options from regional airports. This is fantastic news for those of us living outside the major metropolitan areas who are tired of trekking to Madrid or Barcelona just to catch a flight.

One particularly exciting addition is British Airways Cityflyer's new seasonal service connecting San Sebastián with Glasgow. Can you believe it? A direct link between northern Spain and Scotland! This route will operate twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays between July 18 and September 8, 2026. As someone who spent years relying on connecting flights to reach Scotland, this is truly welcome news.

The Balearic Islands are also seeing a major boost in air travel options. Ibiza will be connected to Gatwick twice weekly, and Menorca will offer three weekly flights. But Mallorca takes the cake, with up to ten flights per week between Palma and Gatwick during the summer of 2026. Imagine the spontaneity! A quick weekend trip to London will be a total breeze.

And it's not just the islands getting all the love. On the mainland, Alicante will gain five weekly services to Gatwick, and Málaga will operate four flights a week. Even Catalonia is getting in on the action, with Girona served three times weekly by Jet2, and Reus connected on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. These routes are a game-changer, substantially broadening direct Spain-to-UK travel options beyond the traditional major hubs. It is especially great for those who want to go to UK to visit attractions such as Big Ben.

But wait, there's more! Airlines are also expanding services from the UK, meaning even more return options for those of us based in Spain. easyJet, for example, has confirmed a new route between London Southend and Ibiza, launching on April 29, 2026. It will run twice weekly. Ryanair will also operate a new route between Manchester and Castellón from June 1, 2026. Wizz Air is expanding its Spanish network from London Luton from March 29, 2026, to Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Valencia, and Seville.

All in all, it's clear that 2026 is set to be a year of unprecedented connectivity between Spain and the UK, making expat life just a little bit sweeter. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to research the best tapas bars in Glasgow...
