Star Wars SHOCK: Rian Johnson's Exit - Online Hate to Blame?!
Gaming News 17 January 2026

Well, this is awkward. Seems Rian Johnson, the director who split the Star Wars fandom in two with *The Last Jedi*, has directly contradicted Kathleen Kennedy's recent comments about why he hasn't helmed another film in the galaxy far, far away. And he did it with all the subtlety of a lightsaber duel.

Star Wars SHOCK: Rian Johnson's Exit - Online Hate...

Kennedy, the outgoing president of Lucasfilm, suggested in an interview that Johnson was "spooked" by online negativity following the release of *The Last Jedi*, implying that this dissuaded him from returning to the franchise. Strong words, especially considering how fiercely defended that film is by some segments of the fanbase.

But Johnson himself? He's singing a different tune. In response to an IGN social media post referencing Kennedy's remarks, Johnson simply tweeted: "lol zero spooked, sorry." Short, sweet, and to the point. It's a far cry from the usual carefully crafted PR statements we often see in these situations.

Now, Kennedy's original statement did offer some additional context, acknowledging Johnson's commitment to the *Knives Out* franchise and his Netflix deal. She said this occupied much of his time. "Once he made the Netflix deal and went off to start doing the Knives Out films, that has occupied a huge amount of his time." But then she added the bit about him getting "spooked". That part clearly didn't sit well with him.

It's worth remembering that *The Last Jedi* was... divisive. To put it mildly. While some praised its bold choices and subversion of expectations, others felt it betrayed the core tenets of Star Wars. The online discourse became incredibly toxic, with actors and the director himself facing intense harassment. I remember covering some of that stuff myself back then, and it was pretty ugly. It's easy to see why someone *might* be put off by that kind of reception, even if they claim to be unbothered.

Johnson himself has spoken about the passionate nature of Star Wars fans, acknowledging the potential for backlash when something challenges established norms. He’s previously said that the "worst sin is to handle it with kid gloves." So, perhaps he’s genuinely unfazed by the negativity and simply focused on other projects. Or, maybe there's more to the story than either he or Kennedy are letting on. Either way, it looks like this particular chapter of the Star Wars saga has just added another twist.

Regardless, the future of Star Wars is still in motion. We have *The Mandalorian & Grogu* movie heading our way in 2026, and then Ryan Gosling will apparently lead *Starfighter* in 2027. Despite all the drama, the Force is clearly still strong with Disney, even if some relationships are a little... complicated.
